Yellowstone's George Whittaker: Soldier, Scout, and Storekeeper This book is in new, unread condition and describes the life and times of George Whittaker, who was a soldier for the Cavalry at Ft. Yellowstone from 1891-97. He then became a Scout for the Army, serving for about 10 years. He purchased the general store at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone in 1913 from Lyall & Henderson (formerly Jennie Henderson Ash store) and later built a new store and gas station at Canyon. In 1932 he sold out his operation to Pryor & Trischman, who ran the businesses for 20 more years. Whittaker moved to West Yellowstone where he operated the Hayward Cabins until the late 1940's. The book is 7" x 8-1/2" in size, 50 pages long and was self published by the author. Included are 16 B&W photos inside, including old pictures of the Mammoth and Canyon stores, the West Yellowstone operation, and old maps of the Mammoth and Canyon areas.
