Whispers from the Dead - B.L. Brunnemer

Whispers from the Dead picks up right where book 3 left off. Lexie is recovering from her attack and its been rough. She is really struggling with PTSD. On top of all that, she is still trying to fix the veil. Some of the ghosts are impatient jerks and not willing to wait for Lexie to get to them. I think what I like about these books is there is so much going on! First, Lexie is a teenage girl. She does impulsive things like punch a girl because she is mad. She is dealing with romantic feelings for her 5 best friends. Its all so normal in some aspects. Next, you have the ghosts. Every morning she goes to the cemetery and helps dead people move on. Seriously, you could focus entire books just about that! Some of the ghosts' stories are fascinating! Finally, she is learning more about her abilities and what that means.

Overall, Whispers from the Dead continues the series in a great direction. I was unsure in the beginning of the series. Lexie is sometimes such a teenager its annoying; She is impulsive and insecure. However, the plot thickens with each book and I like the direction Brunnemer is taking the story! I really can't wait for more!

Miles is still my favorite guy. I'm kind of over Zeke at this point-he just has a lot of baggage that is getting to be a bit much. My heart hurt for Issac and Ethan in this book for sure. Asher is awesome, but still second to Miles in my heart!

Not too much is seen of Rick or Alexandria in this volume. It focuses on the Hilltop colony, more specifically, it focuses on Carl and Maggie. There will be spoilers in this review.

Maggie is the leader of the Hilltop and some people aren't happy about that. Especially Gregory. Carl is settling in and it's not long before there is trouble. He didn't start, two other teenagers did by attacking Sophia. If Carl didn't set in, they probably would have killed her. Carl saved her, but he did go overboard by almost killing them.

The parents of the boys are mad and want Carl to be punished. They believe their boys to be innocence and Sophia and Carl are getting the blame for all of this. And I understand all parents would want justice if their child is hurt, but these parents are stupid. Their kids are the problem and started it, but they refuse to see that. Rather, they would prefer to blame it on Sophia, Carl, and even Maggie's leadership skills. And Gregory is quite the nuisance. I hope they keep him locked up.

And I'm not sure what to make of this new group, The Whisperers. How they survive is definitely different. And honestly, I'm not sure if I trust Lydia. Carl, for whatever reason, does trust her, though. I think he wants to believe that despite coming from a group like that, Lydia could change. And sure, that is possible. But, fully trusting her only after a day of knowing her? I don't think that's the best idea. And now thanks to her, Carl has become a man.

I really liked this volume, but I don't think Carl is making the best decision. Looking forward to reading the next volume.

The Whispers (A new BEAUTIFUL DEAD Adven...
I am in love with this world the author has created. I like zompoc books, but he takes everything in a completely unique direction. As stated in the blurb, you don't have to read The Beautiful Dead trilogy in order to understand and like The Whispers, but if you have read it, you will gain more from and love this new story. There are so many bits with significance. They’re like easter eggs for BD fans.

As usual, I never knew what would happen next in the beautiful dead world. I'm so excited for this new adventure. I have these ideas and questions. Some of the characters are changed so much, and yet, they feel the same. Some characters are complete 180's from when we first met them.

I just finished reading this so my mind is still reeling. I definitely need some digestion time and a reread. Every page is filled with important information.
I absolutely recommend The Whispers.

Oh, this one was creepy. I can't exactly explain why (except for the very obvious reasons), and normally I read everything without a single blink. But I couldn't keep that up this time. Maybe it was the extreme body count, I'm still not sure.

I did like the book, it was an easy reading suspense novel. My first book by Simon Beckett, but afterwards I also read The Chemistry of Death, his first book. I would recommend this to anyone who has a strong stomach, that probably will help, as there are quite lively descriptions on decomposing bodies (strangely that also happens on the few pages where they don't happen to stumble upon the remains of yet another victim of the serial killer).

And, who would donate his body to a body farm?!

Listened to this in the car on a long trip. That makes three (audio-) books I've listened to by Beckett - all engaging and gruesome on completely over the top. I'd say, however, this was the weakest of the three.
