When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.
Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.
And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.
Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.
The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.
For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

Series: Chief Inspector Armand Gamache (#12)
Seriously though. I cannot read anymore about the corruption at the Suerte. It's boring. Unfortunately after a fantastic read "The Nature of the Beast" I felt Penny back-slid a lot and we have "A Great Reckoning." Gamache is now not retired and is the now head of the Sûreté Academy. Gamache realizes...
And Louise Penny hits it out of the park once again. I cannot tell you how much I adore her characters and her stories and her insight into the human mind and all the messy emotions that roil within. Yes, there's a murder mystery in the story, but Gamache stories are SO SO much more than just a mur...
A Great Reckoning, Louise Penny, author; Robert Bathurst, narrator This is book 12 in the detective series with Chief Inspector Gamache. I love the quiet wisdom and strength with which the author has imbued Commander Armand Gamache. His authority and power come from his dignified bearing not an atti...
A Great Reckoning takes place between Three Pines and the Police Academy, where Gamache is the new Chief Superintendent. Of course, someone gets killed and the pursue of the killer begins, but, as always with Louise Penny's Gamache mysteries, there is so much more than that and that's why I love thi...
AudiobookFantastic book. I didn't figure out who the "bad" guy(s) are/were until the end of the book. A past emotional pain of Armand's comes to light and a village mystery is solved. Also we're kind of left hanging on what is next in Armand's life. Very good book. Very good series.
