Louisa Clark has been grieving for nearly two years over the death of her fiancée, Will Traynor. She is yet to come to terms with the loss and it seems she is inching closer into a permanent depression. She tried shifting to Paris to start her life all over again but it doesn’t seem to work. Her parents and friends seem to be helpless to pull her through.

Louisa survives a fall from her rooftop and ends up bedridden for weeks. It is during this time that she finally resolves to take charge of her life and start all over again. She gets the shock of her life when Lily, a teenager arrives at her doorstep, claiming to be Will’s long lost daughter. She never met Will and he did not know that she existed. She had known about the death of Will and was desperately trying to connect with anyone who was related to Will who would accept her as their own. Louisa decides to help Lily and get her reunited with her family. She offers her a place to stay but soon realizes that Lily had baggage of her own which she might not be able to handle. Louisa’s family too discourages her from taking on a new responsibility.

Louisa finds encouragement and hope through Sam, a paramedic who helped her during her accident and eventually falls in love with him. She also connects with a recovery group and shares her struggles and dreams with them. She journeys along with Lily through her issues and finally helps her connect with Will’s mother and gets her a home to stay.

Louisa gets a now Job in New York and she is sad to leave Sam and London behind. Sam and Louisa’s family encourage her to move ahead. She finally seems to have overcome her past and step into an uncertain and adventurous future.
