Fourth Street is the most upscale shopping district in Berkeley, and considered by many as one of the most original in the Bay Area. You don't come here to buy things you need, you come here to buy things you want - special items for the special people in your life. Located off Highway 80 and adjacent to Berkeley's main thoroughfare, University Avenue, Fourth Street attracts retail therapy seekers from all around the Bay. This isn’t just another one of those extravagant, expensive shopping districts, Fourth Street offers a unique selection of stores as eclectic as the city in which it resides. Artists, European inclined, bohemian inspired, professionals, and families flock here to wander about in stylish stores, sip coffee or premium tea, dine sidewalk side, or grab a gourmet treat for the next dinner party. Long ago, the area around Fourth Street was primarily industrial, with some maritime businesses and some stores serving the building trades. Revitalization began slowly, the area offered low rents drawing artists, artisans and fledgling businesses. Next, the opening of a couple of destination restaurants in the late '70s and early '80s (the still wildly popular Bette's Oceanview Diner and the defunct Fourth Street Bar and Grill) helped reshape in the minds of many that the area offered something other than the place to purchase lumber or concrete. Slowly, retail shops moved in approximately 15 years ago and soon afterwards the street became a major shopping destination. The considerable success of Fourth Street as a shopping and dining mecca has changed the funky, semi-industrial West Berkeley landscape that surrounds it. Housing prices in the neighborhood have skyrocketed, and you'll find crowds and traffic at all hours, especially the weekends. This Microguide offers a comprehensive look inside the history of Fourth Street’s rise from an industrial area to the modern day sought after shopping destination for items as unique as every personality who ambles about the sidewalk.
