The Gourmet Ghetto is the business district of the North Berkeley neighborhood known as the birthplace of California cuisine. Other noteworthy developments that can be traced to this neighborhood include specialty coffee, the farm-to-table and local food movements, the U.S. introduction of chocolate truffles and baguettes, the popularization of the premium restaurant designed around an open kitchen, and the California pizza made with local produce.Early founding influences date back to late 1960s were Peet's Coffee, Chez Panisse and the Cheese Board Collective. The neighborhood, anchored by Alice Waters' internationally recognized Chez Panisse, became the center of farm-to-table food sourcing, using selected locally grown produce, especially organic and sustainably grown ingredients. The district includes commercial properties along Shattuck Avenue from Delaware to Rose Streets, and on Vine Street from just below Shattuck to Walnut Street. The restaurants, boutiques, and galleries along Shattuck Avenue and Vine Street in North Berkeley share an emphasis on unique, artisan-products and services. Sidewalk cafes, flower stands, bakeries, the Thursday Farmers Market, and fine food purveyors help shape the landscape to give it a unique European vibe.
