~~ includes ALL the original illustrations (over 120) by John R. Neill, many of them in color, and a new Preface by Oz expert and Eltanin Editor Joseph Nusbaum. ~~

From the Editor’s Preface:
"L. Frank Baum penned Glinda of Oz amidst a 'long and confining illness,' as he described it in his final introductory note “To My Readers” in his prior Oz book, The Magic of Oz. Baum then promised his readers to continue “the Oz Books… as long as I am able to write them…” He did continue, completing Glinda before he died on May 6, 1919. The Magic of Oz was published one month after his death, and Glinda of Oz was issued the following year. ... Glinda of Oz has been noted for its naturalism in contrast to the earlier Oz books. In it, Dorothy and Ozma set out on their own without the aid of manufactured, ambulating folk and magical animals. Perhaps tied to this naturalism, the settings in Glinda are a marked transition from fantasy to that of science-fiction: submersible cities, submarine boats, and steel compounds that can be fashioned into a mobilized city infrastructure. In all of this, Baum seems to be leaving the childlike fairy-story elements of talking animals and fantastic companions behind. Instead, the protagonists rely on scientific advancement, ingenuity, and ultimately friendship and the wisdom of elders to see them through...."
