“Stop all this talk about monsters, Michele. Monsters don’t exist. It’s men you should be afraid of, not monsters.”A sweltering heat wave hits a tiny village in Southern Italy, sending the adults to seek shelter, while their children bicycle freely throughout the countryside, playing games and getting into trouble. On a dare, nine-year-old Michele Amitrano enters an old, abandoned farmhouse, where he stumbles upon a secret so terrible that he can’t tell anybody. As the truth emerges, Michele learns that the horror in the creepy old house is closer to home than he ever imagined.A widely acclaimed international bestseller, I’m Not Scared is a spine-tingling novel that combines a coming of age narrative with a satisfying, enthralling story of suspense.

It's a very evocative depiction of this moment in 9 yr old Michele's life. But ultimately, I wanted more than the narrow focus it provided. I really wished the scope...

The parents stay in and try to alleviate the heat in whatever ways they can. Michele is only concerned about today, like most children and does not yet...

You really are not sure where you're going to end up.   It is short (just around 200 pages) so you could read it in a sitting or two. The description of the idyll...

After so much waste paper I deserved a really good book, seriously. I had almost plegded not reading anything with a child or teen protagonist, but it was great, really.

A poignant coming of age story about the loss of innocence of a rural Italian boy. The tale is told with enough balance as to be emotionally and intellectually engaging without being overly sentimental. The style comes across as so effortless and the plot is so well handled, that one almost feels as...
