Grade Level 3.8 Madeline is a great story to introduce young students to scary concepts, like having surgery or going to the hospital, through a fictional tale.

One of my favorite picture books. The illustrations are playful and impressionistic and the story is one to remember. I read it as a child, read it to my daughter when she was little and now to my great niece and if I have grand children I'll read it to them.
