I have been attempting to read a Sedaris book for quite some time now. I have gotten the books out of the library, but never seem to get to the point of reading them. I have been doing some driving for work and decided this was the time - it was recommended that I try the audio books, which are re...
I think my expectations were too high for this book. I got what I wanted out of it, I laughed out loud. Many times. But the writing during the in-between times was just okay. What I like about Sedaris, and this is the first book I've read by him, is that he is not pretentious at all, which I was hal...
The word that is coming to mind as a descriptor for [book: Me Talk Pretty One Day] by [author: David Sedaris] is deceptive. But, that word has all kinds of negative connotations, and I'm struggling thesaurusless to find a word that evokes the right combination of simplicity plus cleverness with a t...
I found this book not as hilarious as it's cracked up to be. Some parts of certain stories (e.g. "Go Carolina", "See You Again Yesterday") are funnier than others, while the rest barely made me grin. But I guess it's good to while time away on the bus. The best story in my opinion is "Jesus Shaves".
David Sedaris is someone that got the whole dysfunctional memoir genre right. His first success is that instead of making his life a novel - seriously who's life really fits into novel form? - he creates short stories out of the events of his life. Second, the stories are unique and instantly enga...
A bunch of the most hilarious Sedaris short stories ever including some with him trying to learn French in France. It's hard to believe that he has been underrated for such a long time. Not a 5 star piece just because a couple of stories at the end of the book are a bit too childish.
As the title suggests, much of Me Talk Pretty One Day revolves around speech and speaking: > Back in school lil' David (I guess he's still kind of little, isn't he) was forced into correcting his sibilant speech by a highly determined therapist. We're led to wonder if she wasn't stamping out boys' l...
A good read overall, though sometimes I wondered how much was fact and how much was added for the sake of being funny. I didn't really laugh outloud for any part of this book, as I did with "Naked," but it wasn't a bad read.
