Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity's cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, over half the human race has died.
Now Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize the scattered survivors without getting killed.
His chances look bleak. The aliens have definitely underestimated human tenacity--but no amount of heroism can endlessly hold off overwhelming force.
Then, emerging from the mountains and forests of Eastern Europe, new allies present themselves to the ragtag human resistance. Predators, creatures of the night, human in form but inhumanly strong. Long Enemies of humanity...until now. Because now is the time to defend Earth.

In this one it also has a twist at the end which not everyone seems to like but I did.A lot of the book is fairly stand...
This book made me sad.Not because it was a sad book. Okay, well, rather, it is, but not in the cry-me-a-river sort of way.It made me sad because I am a HUGE David Weber fan. I love his Honor Harrington series. Love it. Lurve it, even. I am also a huge fan of end-of-the-world apocalyptic scenarios, e...
I've liked most of Weber's books in the past, but I couldn't even get to "the event" in this one; I quit in the first few dozen pages. Every character, human and alien, was so ridiculously stereotyped that I had to put it down after one session. The aliens especially were so utterly two-dimensional....
Ok, this book was a little heavy on the gun-loving technical detail of each and every weapon used - but it more than makes up for it with its innovative ending. I definitely did not see that one coming (well, more than a couple pages out, anyways)Don't want to spoiler the book, so not giving details...
