When assuming that ethos, pathos, and logos are required in public speaking, it may also be assumed that the speaker is well versed to deliver a message utilizing the three aforementioned pillars of public speaking. Ethos enriches either the credibility and / or character of the speaker and may be an accepted practice among communication professionals and researchers. Likewise, pathos – the building of an emotional connection to the audience – and logos – the founding of a logical argument during a speaking engagement – are also regarded as necessary components to public speaking. With origins pre-dating the current era, Aristotle could be credited with founding the three pillars of public speaking with his specific theory on three persuasive appeals.
