More like 3.5/5Hale does a wonderful job of creating a fantasy book that has a pretty firm standing here in the real world. I love that his book felt more like historical fiction rather than fantasy. Mount Eskel felt pretty complete. The book wasn’t terribly long but I felt I had a good grasp on wha...

This was a cute young YA story, but the quality of the cast reading wasn't great. In a simple fantasy setting, the notion of competing for princesshood is held up against the reality of the benefits of educating girls.

Although written at a reading level appropriate for young readers, it wasn't simplistic or lacking in substance. Miri was an absolutely delightful protagonist to spend time with. She is funny, kind, and, above all, does not take herself too seriously. I did not miss the teen angst at all! I always appreciate it when an author trusts her readers to handle a protagonist who isn't smugly superior to all other fem...

After an unsuccessful attempt at reading Goose Girl, I decided to give Shannon Hale another try. Since joining GR I’ve heard nothing but great things about her books. However, I think the hype led me to have bigger expectations and as a result her writing just seems to fall flat for me. I find that ...
