One word for Richard Wright's novel: Intense. Thy Fearful Symmetry isn't a read for a sunny day at the beach. No, this book is more the type that you drag into your bed and read under the covers with a flashlight. The end of the world as we know it is here. The apocalypse, Judgement Day, call it wha...

I'm not sure I should get credit for this book. I only finished two of its three sections (about 60% of a 500+ page book) before the library seized it back. While it is a good book, it is a painful read. The book follows the life of a young black man in Chicago around 1940. Segregation and racism ar...

i hate that this is our history, and that it reflects far too much of our current attitudes as well (which is why i can't seem to read enough about this issue). i thought the stuff about communism was particularly interesting as it was entirely new information, and pretty fascinating.

Even after thinking about this book for days, I still don’t know what to write. I think we’ve all learned about 1930s/1940s black America, but none of us have truly experienced it. We sympathize with the black people, we cheer on stories of people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., and w...

This was a difficult book to read. Not because of the writing, the writing was excellent. But because of the subject matter. I don't think I realized quite how bad things were in the south for our black brothers and sisters. I've read Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Autobiography of Frederick Douglass, an...

I know this sounds sort of twisted but the first chapter was hysterically funny. Okay, what kind of child burns down his house before his teen delinquent career even began? I've only read up to part one of Black Boy but one day, I'll finish the rest when I get the book.

Black Boy is one that I read in high school without ever truly appreciating it. This re-read definitely corrected my ignorance and failure at respect, for Mr. Wright is more than worthy of a reader's respect. Surrounded by ignorance, abject poverty, and an entire society that considered him less tha...

I'm a big fan of Apex Publishers, and this collection of short stories and poetry did not disappoint. I cannot recommend it highly enough to fans of horror and dark fiction. The theme of the collection is faith of all types: having faith or losing faith or finding faith; faith in higher powers, faith...
