More so than Native Son, Black Boy is Richard Wright's masterpiece. The book is Wright's autobiography about growing up poor and black under the institutionalized racism of the South prior to the Civil Rights movement.

I listened to Black Boy by Richard Wright for this month's bookclub read. Wonderfully narrated, this is Wright's biography of growing up black in the South during the 1920s and 1930s. Wow, what a powerful book! I am definitely glad I read this book and I can see why this is required reading for s...

I do like this series. Each book last half of a year in Alice's life. This, the second installment of her Junior year, did not disappoint. I may never finish this. Getting through the first two sections was a slog. Veronica and I talked a lot about it as we were going on (she was reading it for school), and it is clear To me that i fundamentally did not get it. Veronica said the third section was good, and I believe her, because our ta...

Like most of Wright's books (at least the one's I've read) there is a lot of anger. It really draws you in.

The unfolding of this story has the inevitability of a car stuck on a railway line with an express train hurtling towards it. You know what's going to happen, you don't want it to happen, you can't look away while it happens. When the smash comes, it's still a massive shock. I caught myself mutterin...
