The subtitle for this book is a very good choice, since this is a book mostly about Catherine the Great and only about Russian history when it's related to her. I wanted to read this book because I realized that I know almost nothing about Russian history.

This is an epic biography! It is thorough, not only giving readers a great portrait of Catherine, but also a great portrait of the place and times in which she lived. This is a lengthy, but extremely readable book.
Title and Statement of Responsibility
Well worth listening to all nineteen CDs. Massie really loves his subject, and I came away knowing a whole lot more about her and Russian history.

I've loved reading Robert K. Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra, and have read it multiple times. So I was looking forward to reading this, yet a bit worried that it wouldn't live up to my expectations. I needn't have worried. One of Massie's strengths is his ability to bring his readers close enough ...

There were two reasons that I read this book, One, I had read Massie's Pulitzer Prize winning book, Nicholas and Alexandra previously and I wanted to read this book after reading that book to gain some historical perspective on how previous Russian tzars had influenced the decisions that Nicholas ma...
