A somewhat silly premise and conclusion, though that's okay for this light fare. I don't buy for a minute that she'd leave Easter. Another 20 pages of agonized decision-making could have rescued this. and served the novel's need for Marina to have learned something about herself, her own choices, an...

You're right, Toni. It's preposterous! It became unbelievable early on for me because there's no way Marina would go to Brazil BY HERSELF looking for Dr. Swenson. Anyone looking for a good REAL book about the Amazon should read The Lost City of Z.

Ann Patchett is one of my favourite authors. This book is no exception even though the middle bit, in Manaus, was a bit too long. I'm off to the Amazon soon and this book scared me a bit, but the complexity and honesty of the book made me want to go even more. I would recommend it to good friends wh...

Review first published on my blog: http://memoriesfrombooks.blogspot.com/2011/09/state-of-wonder.htmlState of Wonder is the story of Dr. Marina Singh, a doctor who now works for a pharmaceutical company. The company is funding a drug development program in Brazil. The book begins as Dr. Singh disco...

Dr. Annick Swenson is working in the Brazilian jungle on a drug that could change the lives of women beyond imagination. She is a difficult woman to deal with though and refuses to communicate with the pharmaceutical company financing her research, doesn’t share any of her findings and stays silent ...

Another beautiful book from one of the most talented authors working today. While not as gripping and wondrous as Bel Canto, it is perhaps her most mature and self-assured book. She raises some major questions about science and morality and, while she doesn't presume to answer them, gives you quit...

I was hesitant to read Ann Patchett's State of Wonder, mainly, because I'd already heard the inevitable comparisons to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, a novel that terrorized me as a student and still sends shudders through me at the though of ever having to re-read it. Still, the allure of a new...

I adore Ann Patchett, but think her recent books haven't been as good as her first couple. However, this sees her back on top form - a truly wonderful book, believable, flawed and sympathetic characters, great story that pulls you along relentlessly, wonderful descriptions of the jungle, I could go ...

This marks the third time that I have dipped into the writing pool of Ann Patchett and let me tell you, she does not disappoint! Dr. Marina Singh embarks on a trip to Brazil in an effort to determine two things: What happened to her colleague, who had died there scant weeks ago and what kind of prog...

I don't know if author Ann Patchett has spent time with an isolated tribe in the Amazon jungle, but after reading State of Wonder I feel like I have. With a compelling plot, vivid scenes and characters that seem to live and breath on their own this was a hard book to put down. I will definitely be t...
