This is a collection of 36 stories ranging from 1981 to 2002 and purporting to represent the best shorts in science fiction in those years. A blurb on the back by GRR Martin says that "if a science fiction fan from 1984 chanced to stumble into a time warp and pop up in the here and now, and wanted t...

I read this book in chunks, which is pretty telling of its enthralling capabilities (not that great). Read it because of a friend's recommendation and Terry Pratchett's name on the cover. The only reason it's worth reading is for the introduction of the long earth and the steppers. This concept rea...

If you liked HG Wells original....then give it a go. I only gave it 3 stars, but I enjoyed it. It did drag on a bit, but I was rewarded for my patience. It is different, but good. I won't read it again, however.

The Long War is the sequel to Pratchett and Baxter's earlier novel, The Long Earth, which asked the question: what if humanity suddenly had access to a billion Earths, all subtly different variations on the original?I was kind of expecting The Long War to be a sort of hate letter to humanity, from t...

Proxima bills itself as a planetary romance with exploration and colonization of an alien world. The book certainly has plenty of that, but it also has two other subplots: a political one involving a Cold War-style detente between the U.N. and China, and a cosmic mystery with consequences to the un...

For the record, I love Pratchett's work, and the three books I read by [a:Stephen Baxter|20295|Stephen Baxter|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1223817214p2/20295.jpg] I enjoyed. I was thrilled they were working together. It should be noted, however, that I am a reader, not a fan as Pra...

2.5 starsIf you pick up this book based on the title you'd be disappointed. It carries on the story set-up in [b:The Long Earth|13147230|The Long Earth|Terry Pratchett|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1335532694s/13147230.jpg|18164154] but set 10 years later. Many worlds have now been pop...

"Incomplete novel. Old fashioned SF. No emotion."This book disappoints on multiple levels:It lacks the humanity that is normally at the core of Terry Pratchett's books. No matter how odd the circumstances of DiscWorld are, the people, even the non-human ones, a real and you learn to care for them or...

Stephen Baxter has been on my radar for a while now, but the poor fellow keep getting pushed back in favour of more "flavour du jour" books. He is one of the elite sci-fi writers working actively today I think (among Reynolds, Hamilton, Scalzi, Stross etc.). I did give [b:Raft|100680|Raft|Stephen Ba...
