As the author of such classic horror and supernatural novels as “The Stand,” “Carrie,” and “The Shining,” Stephen King has frequently been dubbed – appropriately enough – “The King of Horror.” While best known for his books and the movies inspired by many of them, King has also been prolific in short stories, with about 200 published. “The Bazaar of Bad Dreams” collects 18 of King’s short stories and two of his poems, some of which are original to the book while others are reprints. For those familiar with King’s writing, many of the stories contain the supernatural elements of horror that King is best known for – such as “Mile 81,” “Bad Little Kid,” and “Ur.” Just as many stories in this collection, however, are likely to surprise King fans. Some, while rich in horror, evoke fear without summoning fantastic or science fiction elements. In these stories – such as “Premium Harmony,” “Batman and Robin Have an Altercation,” or “Morality” – the horrific situations are completely plausible, even realistic. That doesn’t make the plots any less pleasantly terrible. King even dips occasionally into genres he’s not normally associate with, such as Westerns, humor, or narrative poetry.
