Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in comparison with the over-compensations for misery. And, of course, stability isn't nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand.

I believe that good, strong minds should never be kept from strong words and unsafe novels.

me (as Carla Brumble), "Facing Myself in the Dark", my first published short story

Just reread it for the first time in years, and I still like it, I'm still proud of it. I was afraid of that embarrassed cringe as I realized how juvenile and heavy-handed it was, but, no. Would I edit it differently now, all these years later? Yes. But does it still stand on its own as a fine short story? Yes, I think so.
