Dreamsnare
Dreamsnare - Althea Claire Duffy Dreamsnare - Althea Claire Duffy Review written & published on www.criticalwrit.com

I don't often read stories shorter than a full-length novel. If you follow my reviews, you’ll notice that I read a lot, and nothing feels long enough for me (it’s a curse, I tell you). I tend to prefer more drawn out stories, which I find can offer more complexity and at the same time more room to process what you read.

But I do make exceptions, and the 15,000 words novelette Dreamsnare by Althea Claire Duffy is one that I don’t regret. I believe it’s only the second novelette she’s written, so not quite a debut work, but definitely a work of fiction from a new author.

Kereda is a broken woman. She’s lost everything: the right to ply her trade as a shoemaker, her unborn child, her husband, her home, and to top it all, her family won’t talk to her anymore.

So when her roommate tells her that the very best pair of shoes she’s ever made might be cursed and the cause of all her pain, she knows that she doesn’t have anything left to lose anymore. She sets out to find Serin, the dreamworker, and ask her to remove the curse and free her from this seemingly unending string of failures. But the curse is not what it seems, and both women get more than they had bargained for when it traps them in the dreamworld.

Dreamsnare introduces us to a complex but enticing form of magic that’s somewhere between spiritual healing, with an strong emphasis on emotions, and more classic enchantment, all woven into one craft. It did take me two readings to understand it better, and perhaps the limitations of a novelette made the medium not well suited to the task. I felt there was too much telling and not enough showing, and some elements were still left a bit unexplained. Serin still does a good job of explaining to us how her craft works, but you’ll need to concentrate to make sure you don’t miss anything— this is not a story for us to relax into.

Still, I really liked the dreamwork, and I enjoyed the way it dealt with emotions, such as Kereda’s strong self-loathing and depressed thoughts coating the fabric of her shoes. It was an unusual, more abstract way to depict depression, and it spoke to me.

Strong emotions are the key element of the story— guilt, self loathing, depression and failure all weigh heavily on the hearts of our characters. But it is also a story about healing, about opening old wounds that never quite healed properly. It is about taking a glance back in order to set out forward again. Definitely a good short read from a promising new author.

Tandem Coming of Age Stories: Althea and Oliver
Althea & Oliver - Cristina Moracho

Two lifelong friends with shared childhoods must navigate coming of age and the inevitable challenges to their relationship. The complicating factor is that they are boy and girl. My best childhood friend was a boy also, so I connected with this pair. Growing up is hard enough, but a frightening illness affects them both. This book gives insight about KLS, or Kleine-Levin Syndrome, which causes Oliver to fall into long sieges of deep slumber, lasting weeks at a time. Althea must find a way to reconcile her deepening feelings for him with the fact that they are not exactly mutual, and also deal with managing to go on in the face of his illness and absences. By the end of the book both characters have learned a great deal about KLS, their relationship, and their unfolding futures. I liked the ending, which is open to interpretation and also offers hope for both of them.

Watching the clock for the release
Althea & Oliver - Cristina Moracho

A friend had read the ARC of this, gave it five stars and a fabulous review, which made me take note of the book. Hence I scrambled to get a review copy. BUT sadly I only got an excerpt. NOW I am not a fan of those really. But I thought to myself, I might not like the writing style or I might not like the book, so this is a good thing. Well let me just tell you upfront, it was not. Cause this just left me wanting more!
The writing style is really witty, easy going, accurate and surprisingly deep.
The character building is so far, pretty incredible. This is should be way to short to have already connect the with the MCs. But more so, in this teeeeeeeny tiny excerpt I got a good feel for a lot of the support cast as well.
The story line, well you get thrown in at the middle - which byt the way is done expertly and speaks for Moracho's knowledge of her craft - and then.. it just stopped. DAMN excerpts!!!!
My rating is in a way an estimation, cause I doubt that this is going to go much worse than 4Stars...but also that's really what I would rate this tid bit of book piece I got.

So basically, I am now like Althea watching my clock, the 9th can't come soon enough

A gorgeous heartbreak of a read
Althea & Oliver - Cristina Moracho

I want to stand on a rooftop with a bullhorn and proclaim my love for this story. Then fling said bullhorn to smithereens on the ground at how this gorgeous tale broke my heart. It's a funny, sweet, sad story about best friends - one of whom wants more and one of whom just wants life to go back to normal. It's about how complicated and wonderful and awful relationships are when the other person knows you better than anyone. I literally just finished and it's all so raw and precious that I can't even talk about it more than that.

Thanks to Viking Juvenile and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Althea & Oliver
Althea & Oliver - Cristina Moracho **I received Sneak Peek: Althea & Oliver from NetGalley via Penguin Young Readers Group (Viking) in exchange for an honest review.**

3 stars - This is based off of what I've read (aka, it's going to change)!!

What a lovely and interesting sneak peek!

Althea and Oliver has definitely sparked my interest. I look forward to picking this up when it releases so I can find out what is happening to Oliver! Althea is an...interesting character that I feel might bother me as this story progresses. I'm hoping she's not going to turn out to be really self-centred. Lastly, I'm curious to see if the author will give us the predictable ending or one that might make me cry...

P.S Amazon & Chapters (Canadian stores) has the release date set to October 14th, while B&N and Amazon have it for October 9th. Jealous...
