Darth Vader and Son - Jeffrey Brown

For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

An adorably clever, fun read featuring Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Loved the artwork. The comics have great humor with a little sadness underlying most of them with later events in mind. A great book for those who enjoy parody and Star Wars.

I don't think you have to be an expert on Star Wars to enjoy this book, just have a sense of the major characters, their relationships, and a few events. Even then, most of the book can be enjoyed on a very basic level.

Fun, quick read with excellent artwork and massive awww factor.

Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 1
Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 1 - Salvador Larocca,Kieron Gillen Re-establishes Darth Vader as the badass from the original trilogy, and introduces some amazing new characters to the canon, Doctor Aphra, 0-0-0 and BT-1. What's not to love?

Review: Darth Vader vol. 4: End of Games
Star Wars: Darth Vader, Vol. 4: End of Games - Kieron Gillen,Salvador Larroca

Outstanding. This title is constantly surprising me. Considering that this was the last I picked up, and that my interest level hovered somewhere between five and zero, the fact that it's pulled out ahead as my favorite of the new Marvel SW titles is as shocking as it is pleasing! Presenting an Anakin who is within himself introspective and damaged, and effortlessly and emotionally bridging the gap between the original trilogy and the prequels. And this! This not only provided an extremely satisfying conclusion to this story arc, but included some of the best Star wars writing I've read. When Vader's life support gets shut off? Yeah, that was some strong stuff. Loved it!

Review: Darth Vader vol. 2: Shadows and Secrets
Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol. 2: Shadows and Secrets - Kieron Gillen,Salvador Larroca

If you'd told me that I'd be enjoying a comic about Darth Vader as much as I am even five years ago, I would have called you a liar. There's so much that could go wrong here, and elements to it that shouldn't work (Dr. Aphra) but shockingly do.

I've lived through three phases of Star Wars comics: the original Marvel run, which was unendingly silly, and very much of the time (early 80's), a fun read when I was little but nothing that stands the test of time; Dark Horse's grim 90's incarnation, with great artistic integrity, but very little fun; and the new one, back to Marvel. The new run has proven to be so strong, it lets me forget all that other stuff.

Dr. Aphra is an interesting and complex character, and just a lot of fun to read about; the odd couple that she and Vader make, and their very uneasy friendship, should not work, and it's one of the reasons I put off starting this comic, but they managed to sell it, and make this comic... possibly my favorite of the new line.

And the emotional resonance, the callbacks to the prequels, as Vader learns Luke's name, and researches his history, is so much better done than the prose EU that they've released examining the same subjects.

I'm all in here! Got Vader Down and volume 3 waiting to go!

Darth Vader And Son
Darth Vader and Son - Jeffrey Brown

I recently read Vader's Little Princess and since it was adorable, I wanted to read more of the series. It turns out that Darth Vader and Son is the only other title available in my library, which means I will have to find the others somewhere else.

Like the Little Princess this one was also very cute! I'm convinced myself that these are made solely for grown ups even though I found the book between the comics for little children. It is filled with references to the films, and it's not really a story, more of a collection of one panel comics. Very nice comics though.
