Review: Time to Let Go by Lurlene McDaniel
Time to Let Go - Lurlene McDaniel

Title: Time To Let Go
Author: Lurlene McDaniel
Series: Erin Bennett, 2
Format: ebook
Length: 266 pages
Rating: 2 stars

Synopsis:
The doctors assure Erin Bennett and her parents that they can't find a physical cause for her headaches. But the throbbing, violent pain is so intense that Erin knows she needs help. Even landing the lead in the senior musical opposite David Devlin, the good-looking, popular guy everyone else is wild about, doesn't give Erin much pleasure. In fact, she finds David so annoying that her headaches are getting worse.

Erin knows that the headaches started just after the death of her younger sister, Amy, one year ago. She though her grieving was over, but somehow the headaches must be connected to Amy. The therapist Erin starts seeing begins to help her deal with her pain, but what is it about David that triggers Erin's violent reaction?

Favourite character: David
Least favourite character: Erin

Mini-review:
This was okay, was jam-packed full of drama, too much actually. There was a giant mistake where a character's last name changed completely from the first book, which took what small chance it had of being saved and flushed it down the toilet. David was the only saving grace.

Fan Cast:

Erin Bennett - Lili Reinhart
Dr. Roberta Richardson - Laura Linney
Mrs. Bennett - Connie Neilson
Mr. Bennett - Dermot Mulroney
Shara Perez - Victoria Justice
David Devlin - Jacob Latimore
Beth Clark - Madison Davenport
Ms. Thorton - Zoë Saldana
Travis Sinclair - Noah Centineo

Review: Somewhere Between Life and Death by Lurlene McDaniel
Somewhere Between Life and Death - Lurlene McDaniel

Title: Somewhere Between Life and Death
Author: Lurlene McDaniel
Series: Erin Bennett, 1
Format: ebook
Length: 266 pages
Rating: 2.5 stars

Synopsis:
The celebration isn't supposed to end in tragedy. The night of their high-school drama group's cast party starts out as fun for sisters Amy and Erin.
Their lives come crashing down when Amy takes the car to get more food and has a horrible accident. Erin and her family pray for Amy to awaken from her coma. But as the monitor bleeps and the respirator hisses, Amy lies somewhere between life and death.
Erin and her parents must find the courage to accept the fact that Amy's life-support system will never bring her back. When she dies, can the family give some meaning to her senseless death? Can Amy's dying become the hope for someone else's living?

Favourite character: Shara
Least favourite character: Erin

Mini-review:
I struggled with this book. Erin didn't feel like a believable 17 year old and before you argue that everyone deals differently with grief, it wasn't just that. She was insufferable and unbelievable before her sister's accident. The author made her character appear stupid just to explain things to her younger audience, which to me is lazy. Will probably read the second book just to see where the whole thing goes.

Fan Cast:

Erin Bennett - Lili Reinhart
Shara Perez - Victoria Justice
Amy Bennett- Joey King
Mrs. Bennett - Connie Neilson
Mr. Bennett - Dermot Mulroney
Travis Sinclair - Noah Centineo
Beth Clark - Madison Davenport
David - Jacob Latimore

HOUSE OF SALT AND SORROWS BY: ERIN A. CRAIG
House of Salt and Sorrows - Erin A Craig

I'm so torn on my feelings about this book. On one hand, I really loved that this was a reimagining of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and I found the haunting more horror novel parts of this book to be brilliant! Unfortunately though there wasn't that many of them really. I thought that this area in particular is where this author shined. I found her darker scenes to be the most vivid. I truly hope she one day decides to write a horror novel, because I'd read the hell out of it.

On the other hand I found this to be a slow read for me. More often than not I was just waiting to get to the next macabre scene because those were the ones I enjoyed the most. I think maybe the issue for me was that this story was being pulled into so many directions, a mystery, a romance, a thriller, etc. that it ultimately didn't fully accomplish any of them. It was as if the foundations were there but none were fully fleshed out and realized. The romance ended up feeling rushed, the mystery seemed to rise and then fall away and then rise again, and the thrilling parts were too few and far between. Sometimes compelling characters can help make up for this type of thing a bit, but I had a hard time connecting with any of them. Annaleigh more often than not thought about doing things rather than actually fully going for it.

Ultimately House of Salt and Sorrows just ended up falling somewhere in the middle for me. I liked the roots individually, but as we went along they kinda grew tangled together, suffocating each from their full potential.

I received an ARC of this book from Delacorte Press via Netgalley and this is my honest review.
