Hex in the Future
All Star Western Vol. 5: Man Out of Time (The New 52) - Jimmy Palmiotti,Justin Gray,Moritat
I enjoy the heck out of the All Star Western/Jonah Hex graphic novels. Hex is such a character. Not at all a Boy Scout, but he dives into to the fray to defend those who need defending. It sure was interesting to see Hex as a fish out of water in the present. He's not a man to fall in with authority just because, which becomes, well, problematic. However, Hex gets on his feet fast, with the help with a young woman with a taste for older rough and tumble bad boys.

The sex and violence are pretty prominent, but it's not as skeevy as one might think. I also liked how not one story is alike in this volume, but the story arcs have plenty of surprises and twists and turns. I was not expecting what happens in the last story at all. There are lots of cool cameos in this. I never thought I'd see Hex and The Man of Steel in the same comic, but I did!

I am hoping this isn't the last volume.

What will I do if it is? Noooooooooo!!!!

The Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree

The Whirlwind in the Thorn Tree: 1 (The Outlaw King)

bookAuthor: S A Hunt

Published: February 2013 by Madmen Press

Category: Steampunk/Fantasy

Ross Brigham returns from active duty in the army to the news that his father Ed, an award-winning fantasy author, has died. Not only that, his wife has left him and his life is in a mess. Ross is persuaded by his father’s fans to finish writing the last novel in the gunslinger series.

Going through his father’s things after the funeral Ross comes across a key he can’t find the lock for and an unusual mirror. Both these objects lead Ross and two of his father’s greatest fans, Sawyer and Noreen, into the fantasy world of Destin.

There they meet the gunslingers , amongst other much less pleasant people, and are drawn into conspiracies and schemes they don’t, at first, understand. What the three of them learn on their journey through this strange lands makes them re evaluate their lives and everything they thought was real.

Thoughts

Told from the point of view of Ross this is an imaginative story of an extraordinary parallel universe peopled by the characters of Ed’s novels.

The book is very well written and descriptive with vivid imagery. The detailed narrative of the fantasy world makes it very easy to imagine.

I liked that the main characters were believably human with their underlying complex characteristics, emotions and foibles. There’s a good mixture of tension and suspense and the extracts from Ed’s novels at the beginning of the chapters was a great addition. Considering this is not my usual reading I enjoyed it a lot.

The Spitfire and Her Four Gunslingers
The Spitfire and Her Four Gunslingers - Kelly Conrad Heavy on sex, light on actual story content. I was hoping for more romance and it was more wham bam. Not a terrible book just not one I loved. The writing was good and I would try something else from this author in the future.

While I know I am reading erotic I like more story to my sex. I just missed the build and romance elements.

Rogue's Run [Galactic Gunslingers 1] (Siren Menage Amour 48) - Lara Santiago More like a 2.5 star book for me. Not much plot or story.
