Jesse's Girl by Miranda Kenneally

(Hundred Oaks series #6)
Published by: Sourcebooks Fire
Release Date: 7th July 2015
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romance

Practice Makes Perfect.

Everyone at Hundred Oaks High knows that career mentoring day is a joke. So when Maya Henry said she wanted to be a rock star, she never imagined she’d get to shadow *the* Jesse Scott, Nashville’s teen idol.

But spending the day with Jesse is far from a dream come true. He’s as gorgeous as his music, but seeing all that he’s accomplished is just a reminder of everything Maya’s lost: her trust, her boyfriend, their band, and any chance to play the music she craves. Not to mention that Jesse’s pushy and opinionated. He made it on his own, and he thinks Maya’s playing back up to other people’s dreams. Does she have what it takes to follow her heart—and go solo?

My Review

"I don't want to shadow a spoiled pretty boy who sings about making love on tractors anyway."

I became a fan of Miranda Kenneally’s books after reading Breathe, Annie, Breathe a year ago. It was a fabulous young adult romance and I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for me this time. I was definitely hooked to Jesse’s Girl, the characters were fun and I liked the fact they had realistic flaws just like me. As with the last book, this one was fabulously written, with easy flow and great paced.

Seventeen year old, Maya Henry is the middle child in the Henry household. With career day coming up, Maya stated she wanted to be a musician. Her principal, Dr Salter teed up for Maya to meet the infamous Jesse Scott. Maya picked up her first guitar in first grade and knew from then she wanted to perform and play guitar.

Meeting Jesse is like a dream come true and Maya has an all-access pass backstage. When she sees him, Maya cannot deny how good-looking he is, but she is immediately put on the defensive when he believes she just another groupie.

Maya is severely disappointed with meeting Jesse, she just wants to learn about the industry and he is rude, arrogant and moody. Although Maya cannot deny that once he’s on stage, he’s a different person and is fabulous.

Friday is THE day for Maya to shadow Jesse Scott. She will get her chance to see what it’s really like to be a famous musician. From the moment she walks inside his house, Jesse makes it known he isn’t impressed at having her around. Once they actually begin talking business though, Jesse pushes Maya and a plan forms. The schedule for the day goes out the window and Jesse gives Maya the best day of her life.

It seems Jesse has his own issues in life that’s hidden from the rest of the world and with Maya being the up front and no nonsense type of girl, sets him straight. She shows Jesse what a real teenager should be doing and how many people could benefit from his generosity.

Will Maya actually learn anything from this country superstar besides being hounded by press and fans? Why is Jesse not following his heart? Will Maya find the courage to follow her dream? Can Jesse find room in his life for a girl that pushes his boundaries and makes him smile?

Follow along the journey of discovery for Maya AND Jesse. This is a fabulous book that shows dreams can come true if you follow your heart, work hard enough and have enough determination to prove yourself. I love how generous, kind and charming Jesse can be when he opens himself to possibilities. Maya shows how heartache, betrayal and hurdles can be overcome. Ms Kenneally truly is a master and I cannot wait to see what’s next.

Things I Can't Forget by Miranda Keannealy
Things I Can't Forget - Miranda Kenneally
I like this series. I like that while each book focuses on two main characters that characters from early books appear. Kate was there for her friend Emily when Emily discovered she was pregnant and decided to abort the baby. Kate now has to look back on her life and see if what people say to her is true. She also has to deal with her guilt of helping Emily with her abortion. Kate now is dealing with feelings of confusion as she starts to be attracted to Matt. Is it wrong to feel so much so strongly for Matt? Can she act on her feelings and yet stay true to her values?

I like how Miranda Kenneally brings religion into this series. Making Kate question everything she thought she knew and believed, making her wonder why she believes so strongly in God and the teachings she grew up with while others who also grew up with those same teachings have stopped believing or living those teachings, is the strength of this book. I feel that it helps teens to know it is okay to question, to doubt, and to live their values. Watching Kate as she struggles to know why she is wrong to feel as she does brings to mind my own struggles as I was growing up. I liked that Kate stayed true to her values and teachings. I also liked that Kate learned tolerance and acceptance as she struggled to make sense of her changing world. Having Matt helped as she let go of her guilt. I also liked that Matt shared his secret and that he accepted her hesitancy in physically consummating their relationship.

There is a lot going on in this book, not only with Kate but others who also had to change their views of Kate. I think this is the best book of the series so far. I loved it!

Stealing Parker by Miranda Kenneally
Stealing Parker - Miranda Kenneally
I enjoyed this continuation of The Hundred Oaks series.  Parker's mom has divorced her husband when she is tired of living a lie.  She moves in with her female lover and Parker and her family have to live with the gossip and judging by others.  Parker is having a hard time dealing with it and quits softball.  She argues with her dad about going to church also.  She feels more alone as she has a fight with her best friend, Drew, who will not listen to her explanations.  I liked this story.  I like how Parker has a crush on the baseball coach and tries to begin a relationship with him.  She also is falling for one the of baseball players who is on the team she is managing at school.  She's trying not to betray her best friend and is trying to get her dad to open his eyes to the problems of her older brother, Ryan.  When it looks like she has lost everything, she listens to the answer to her prayers and calls her mom.  Her mom is very clear-eyed and open.  She tries to help Parker see that much that happened was not Parker's fault and that Parker is not responsible for the choices others make.  I liked how religion is brought into the story.  It is not preachy but very realistic in the portrayal of what works and what does not.  I liked that Parker grew up during this story and we saw the process.  I keep hoping that her dad opens his eyes.

Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks #4) by Miranda Kenneally
Racing Savannah - Miranda Kenneally

A rich boy … the girl who works for him at his stable … an unforgettable story that will warm your heart.  Oh yea, I went there.  Racing Savannah by Miranda Kenneally is another great book in her Hundred Oaks series.  Not only does it include a sweet coming of age story, it also brings the reader deeper into the world of horse racing and shows just how big a deal it is for females.  Apparently, they’re pretty rare, and Savannah will stop at nothing to make her dreams come true.

Moving to the Goodwin estate should be a good thing.  Better opportunities for both her and her father.  Make some money to help out with a new baby brother on the way.  Perhaps move her way up at the Goodwin stables.  But nothing prepared her for this:  Jack Goodwin, son and heir to the Goodwin fortune and becoming a female Jockey.

But the ever present rule of “thou shalt not date the bosses son”, Savannah can’t fight her attraction to Jack.  But the dreaded question of whether Jack feels the same connection that Savannah feels is always on her mind.  If Jack will do whatever it takes to make his father proud, including dating someone that he feels absolutely no attraction to, can Savannah be even sure that Jack’s intentions are true?  Or is he using Savannah in order for him to win a race…

Feel good books make me smile.  And yes, when I turned the last page of Racing Savannah by Miranda Keneally, I totally had a smile on my face.  You do not have to read the other books in this series to completely enjoy this book (as is the same with the other Hundred Oaks books).

Do past characters make an appearance?  Yes…and no.  It seems Racing Savannah is a little ways into the future, where past characters are beyond the high school/early college emotional life situations.  I guess I was so committed to the story line of Savannah and Jack, that the actually reappearance of past characters totally flew way over my head…until I finally had the ahh ha (!) moment.  Yes, yes…shame on me.

Needless to say, Racing Savannah by Miranda Kenneally is a great addition to the Hundred Oaks series.  Fans of a star-crossed lovers type reads, with a dash of horses and horse racing action, will really enjoy reading this book.
