 October 4th 2016

There are all kinds of surprises under the mistletoe!

As a protector of all jaguar-kind, Guardian agent Demetria MacFarlane isn’t surprised to get a call near Christmas—but when she’s sent to protect a cub whose species she didn’t even know existed, her holiday season gets complicated. And it doesn’t help that her partner is a distraction of the hottest kind.

Hotshot JAG agent Everett Anderson can handle dangerous poachers and wildlife traffickers, no problem…but kids? Everett fears he’ll be stuck cub-sitting under the Christmas tree, but working with one sexy Guardian she-cat may be the best present he’s ever gotten.

I never thought I would be DNFing a Spear’s book. I’ve always enjoyed the stories and romances, but this time it wasn’t clicking for me.

I was not feeling the story, characters, or the case. It felt blaze, predictable, cliche and it wasn’t pulling me in or catching my interest.

I will say the start was dramatic and sad, but after that nothing more for me.

A Very Jaguar Christmas was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

Owner/Review and mind behind Angel’s Guilty Pleasures. However what I am not is a writer. I apologize now for the grammatical and punctuation errors I make, because I know I’m going to make them. I’m a mother, wife, dog owner, animal, and book lover. My favorite animals are horses. As for reading I love all things paranormal & urban fantasy. My favorite shifters are dragons!

A Very Jaguar Christmas (Heart of the Jaguar Book 5) by Terry Spear is a fast-reading book about jaguar shifters and Guardian Agents. Demetria MacFarlane and AG agent Everett Anderson are attracted to each other but there are complications. I gave this paranormal romance four stars.

I received a complimentary Kindle copy from Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley. That did not change my opinion for this review.

Reading progress update: I've read 20%.
A Very Jaguar Christmas (Heart of the Jaguar) - Terry Spear

The start was very dramatic and intense. Now we have moved on and it's been a year. He's got a thing for his dead friends girl and the agencies they work for are wanting all the agencies to get along and work together, so they end up working on a case together. The case is ok. The couple is ok, but it's nothing new.

I like Ms. Spears and never thought I'd have an issue with her stories, but it's just not flowing this time. I'm not feeling the story and characters. Just to one directional and blaze. It's also predictable and cliche.

Not sure I'm going to be continuing.

A Very Jaguar Christmas by Terry Spear
A Very Jaguar Christmas (Heart of the Jaguar) - Terry Spear

I really wanted to love this one. There were so many great elements, but they never really came together. Demetria and Everett have a shared grief that has kept them apart - it was quite a sad beginning, which you don't usually see in a Christmas novel, and that was good. It set it apart a little. But, things change very quickly when they find an abandoned cub. Now, this cub is quite a surprise - it's beyond a surprise, but I can't give it away. Let's just say the Jaguar world will never be the same.

It was cure and well done, this introduction to something new. But it sort of took over the story. Instead of watching Demetria and Everett bond over a little cub, it turned into more of a mystery with a dash of sex. I needed more romance and feelings and denied attraction.

It also sort of bounced around a bit. At times it was hard to follow the dialog and keep up with who was doing what.

*This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

Title: Jaguar Knights

Series: King's Blades

Author: Dave Duncan

Rating: 3.5 of 5 Stars

Genre: SFF

Pages: 400

Format: Hardcover

An attack on an outpost in Chivial, where the former Royal Mistress resides, leads to her kidnapping. An apparently new kind of magic that even the Inquisitors haven't seen before leads to Sir Wolfe being sent on a mission to far away Txiltia. With an Inquisitor as a wife!

Mix in Sir Wolfe's brother, who was the Blade protecting the Royal Mistress and a world based on the Aztecs and you have tale that drags you along!

My Thoughts:

With this being my 6th, and final, King's Blades book, I have realized that Duncan seems to delight in telling a completely different tale with each story. He also seems to like turning characters from former books on their heads.

This was brutal on so many levels. The blood magic of the Txlitians was definitely human sacrifice, harvesting bloody hearts to perform incredible feats of magic. It turned my stomach even while not being gone into detail. Then near the end where Wolfe's wife dies. That cut! Duncan did a fantastic job of making Dolores and Wolfe a real thing.

I also had NO idea where the story was going, or what the end would be until I got there. It was good.
