Beneath the Skin (De La Vega Cats #3) by Lauren Dane
Beneath the Skin - Lauren Dane

Gibson, Bringer of the De La Vega werejaguar Jamboree, has no time or patience for representatives of a much smaller Jamboree violating his territory and makes this very very clear

And then is shot with silver bullets

Thankfully, Mia is close when he is shot and able to get him to safety; a wonderful foundation for a new friendship… but not so much when Mia and Gibson’s families have been at odds for generations. And Mia herself is still recovering from a brutal crime and trying to figure out what to do with her life: getting involved in Jamboree politics in the face of attempted murder was not on the agenda.

I’m going to say I was torn when I first picked up this book. I knew Lauren Dane as an author focuses onParanormal Romance which I’m just not a huge fan of. This isn’t a criticism of her or the genre by any means, merely an expression of different taste. So that leads me to think “not for me” and back off - except she also wrote the Rowan Summerwaite Series which I love and I consider it to be a deep and terrible crime that there are not more books in this series. So I approach this from a complicated position of high and low expectations.

And so we have this book - which is a paranormal romance with an interesting world, some great characters and generally something I really enjoyed which means in the future I’m going to be even more confused

Oh to add to the ways I unnecessarily complicate what should be a simple review - I managed to pick up book 3 of a series. Yes, so this is me deleting my review complaining “I feel like I jumped half way in to a series and have a missed a whole lot of back story!” It turns out that’s because I jumped half way into a series and have indeed missed a whole lot of back story. Go me. So let me add some praise for this book both giving me enough information about the characters and world setting for me to actually enjoy and understand this book but not trying to dump so much back story into this book as to make it unwieldy. Oh and this series is a spin off from an even larger series. Yes this has not been my best decision.

I often dislike the tropes that are common in most of the paranormal romances I read as they seem to be summed up by “unreasonable people turning minor issues into ridiculous convoluted obstacles”. I generally think all these people should stay away from each other because no relationship that has two people this inclined to drama could possibly work except for the neighbours if they have a big enough supply of popcorn

But this book takes so many of these Issues and then… behaves quite reasonably? Like Gibson and Mia’s families have a long grudge after some seriously Not Ok shit Gibson’s granddad pulled on Mia’s grandmother. This has clearly left long wounds on Mia’s families and is a barrier between them. But one that is resolved because everyone is truly shockingly sensible and realises that maybe holding a grudge for 2 generations may not be that fair?

Or there’s the time Mia is angered because Gibson suggests that maybe she needs protection and she pushes back at the idea but doesn’t turn it into more than a moment they need to address - and doesn’t run off on her own or something equally ridiculous to prove her strength and courage

Or there’s the time Mia’s mother is furious because Mia’s relationship with Gibson appears to have put her at risk. Yes that’s a barrier but equally it’s recognised that Mia doesn’t want to derail her future for it nor will doing so make the threat disappear

It’s not that the conflicts that we so often see in Paranormal Romance aren’t present; it’s that the characters deal with these conflicts like actual human beings who respect each other and have half an ounce of sense and it’s amazing how that really does make these storylines so much easier to follow.

And it gave me much more chance to like Gibson and Mia, their history, their experiences, their clearly powerful connections to their families who are so very important to them without them having to dominate the story. (I suspect, now, that these characters will receive)

Release Day Review! Beneath the Skin (de La Vega Cats # 3) by Lauren Dane
Beneath the Skin - Lauren Dane

Previously published; newly refreshed by author

Fall in love with the de La Vega cat shifters in this classic paranormal romance from
New York Times bestselling author Lauren Dane, a spin-off of the fan-favorite Cascadia Wolves series

Sometimes justice comes with blood…

Mia Porter came home to Boston to recover, but her military reflexes kick in when a fellow jaguar is gunned down only inches away. Getting the handsome stranger to safety and removing the bullets is the easy part...discovering she’s saved a member of the very family hers has been at war with for half a century makes things tricky.

Nor is she pleased her cat finds his to be quite an attractive specimen.

Gibson de La Vega, Bringer of Justice, enforces his Alpha’s law and defends de La Vega territory against all. But even he’s not immune to silver bullets. That Gibson feels the same burning desire for Mia only complicates matters.

Negotiating an end to an epic familial feud is nothing compared to the violence sparked by the attack on Gibson. As heat and need build between them, Mia and Gibson will fight together to protect their families from a danger far closer to home than anyone expects.

This book is approximately 55,000 words

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise
: all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

Once again the de La Vega Cats give readers some serious red hot romance with action and suspense.

Neither Mia nor Gibson suspected that Mia saving Gibson’s life would lead to something special, so the relationship between begins with a dramatic event and slowly builds into their happily ever after as they get to know each other. But you know romance is one thing and chemistry is something else altogether different and this couple has some sizzling chemistry from the first sight. The characters are well written and the readers just fall into their story from the get go making this an easy to read but impossible to put down book.

The de La Vegas once again find themselves facing hatemongers and an enemy that they didn’t see coming as the suspense and action keeps readers on the edge of their seat. There is also a tense situation that stems from the past which complicates Mia and Gibson’s growing relationship which adds a bit of drama to the story as well as adding depth to the characters as a group.

Again, Lauren Dane has provided a well written story that never has a dull moment and characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with and I can’t wait to find out what she has in store for us next.

Release Day Review: Revelation (de La Vega Cats # 2) Lauren Dane

Previously published; newly refreshed by author

Fall in love with the de La Vega cat shifters in this classic paranormal romance from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Dane, a spinoff of the fan-favorite Cascadia Wolves series

The very magick that brought them together now makes them targets…

Kendra Kellog may have found her sister, but she’s still miles away from bringing down the evil mages targeting her family. Max de La Vega is exactly what she doesn’t need at this moment in time—strong, smart and the very definition of alpha.

The next in line to run his jaguar jamboree, Max is used to getting what he wants. Right now, he wants Kendra. More than that, he realizes she needs him—and he’ll do whatever it takes to guarantee her safety.

With evil forces out to siphon her magick, Kendra can’t afford to keep pushing Max away. And for once, Max’s cat and his man are in total agreement: Kendra is his to protect.

Revelation is an exciting blend of paranormal, action, suspense and steam!

Max and Kendra set flame to the pages with lots of chemistry and a relationship that reaches out and grabs readers and refuses to let go. Their romance is pretty hot and steamy but has lots of problems from external sources and past sources that adds suspense and heart melting emotions to the story that readers can’t help but get caught up in. All the characters are charismatic which really adds to the electrifying chemistry of the story and ensures that the readers wants to get well acquainted with each and every one. Kendra especially has reader’s full attention because she is an intense blend of warrior that is strong and bold but has a vulnerability about her that arrests the heart with Max being the uber hot alpha male that makes lingerie melt.

The intriguing action and suspense adds thrills to the fast paced story that keeps readers on the edge of their seats with anticipation and a few surprises. The story focuses on Kendra and Max’s relationship with bad guys that annoy the heck out of everyone and a betrayal that characters or readers alike never saw coming.

The author’s world building keeps readers wanting to revisit her world with lots of engaging  and complex characters, intriguing takes on shifters and magick with a bit of a well-known character flaw (bigotry) spicing up the storyline. I really enjoy reading books by N.J. Walters because there is never a dull moment with her vivid characters, enthralling plots and brilliant worlds and I always want to know what happens next. Revelation and the de La Vega Cats are no exception, I was captivated from the first page to the last and I can’t wait to read Beneath the Skin.

great story and characters
Twice Bitten (Cascadia Wolves series, Book 7) - Lauren Dane

Michelle was a cop but also a witch but her co-workers nor her boss knew that.  One night her best friend Allie who she had known since third grade. Allie’s mother Kathy called and Michelle to tell her Allie was missing. Allie’s apartment had been broken into and there was Mage energy in the apartment  as Kathy was also a witch. The witch in Clan Owen had taught the witches Michelle knew some defensive magiiks against the mages who had been attacking witches across the country. Michelle had to think and like a cop, she had to push aside the fear and worry for her best friends and focus on the facts.  Worry wouldn't find Allie , skill would. Some witches from Clan Owen had offered a class on how to read different magikal energies and Michelle had jumped at the chance to learn. Allie had been terrified whatever the magik had done. Allie had been missing at least four hours.  Wiches hadn’t come out to humans yet like some other supernaturals had. Clan Owen was so overwhelmed with their own disappearances that they sent Michelle to the Others who happen to be werewolves who would be able to to track Allie’s scent much better than a witch. Then Michelle went to the werewolves headquarters and heard a voice from her past . It was Josh who had been her first love and broke her heart. Josh took Michelle back to his office and michelle told him why she was there and he said that this was very dangerous but of course he would help. Then he proceeded to tell Michelle why he had never returned to her so long ago, he had been bitten and the alpha of the wolf who had bitten Josh came to help him assimilate to a whole new life. It had taken Josh a year to handle his wolf. Josh had to leave everything and everyone behind. It had been twelve years since Michelle had seen Josh. Josh told Michelle he was the Enforcer there. Josh also said the Mages were a way bigger problem then she knew and Michelle said she wasn’t going back and Josh commented she could always read his mind. Josh had loved Josh deeply when he was a laid back football player and she was a cheerleader. But that person was gone here was a man. Josh told Michelle he could smell her arousal. But Michelle told Josh she had control of her parts. Josh Josh then told her Mages had been working with turned witches in an increasingly organized fashion and witches were being taken and found dead totally drained a couple days later and now they were also taking weres.  They also believe the Mages are working with human anti hate groups. Michelle wanted Josh and knew she wanted him but Michelle had to find Allie before anything else could happen or be explored. Josh tells Michelle she is his mate but he wished he had longer to get her used to the idea and give her time for everything to sink in.

This was a great story as usual for Lauren Dane. I just love her paranormal books and have never read one I didn’t absolutely love and this one was no different. I love how Michelle came to understand why Josh never came back when she was sixteen even if it broke her heart. I also loved how Michelle decided to leave her old life behind and have a whole new life and world. I loved Josh and Michelle together, they so worked. I liked how the witches went to the weres for help and the weres did all they could. I loved the plot and pace of this story. Nothing I could find wrong with this story. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend.
