Mrs. Thomas' Favorite Books
Library Lion - Michelle Knudsen,Kevin Hawkes

Miss Merriweather is the librarian and  is very particular about rules in the library. When a lion comes to the library one day, no one is sure what to do. There aren't any rules about lions in the library. The lion fits in very well at the library and when something terrible happens, the lion quickly comes to the rescue.

Lexile Measure: 470L

I would use this in the classroom with a character reaction to the lion activity sheet.

Library Lion - Michelle Knudsen,Kevin Hawkes

Library Lion, by Michelle Knudsen, is the perfect story to introduce manners of the library to your students. This book's Lexile reading level is 470L, and it would be of the greatest benefit to preschoolers or kindergartners. The central focus of the story is on this lion who ventures into the library one day. The librarian, Miss Merriweather, is strict when it comes to following the rules in the library. When the lion wanders in, most people are panicking about the fact that a lion is walking around. Miss Merriweather tells everyone that he is only allowed to stay as long as he follows the rules. The library must be quiet at all times, and there is no running allowed. The lion proves to be of big help to the librarian and all of the people working there. His big feet are surprisingly quiet on the library floor, and he loves to be a comfy backrest for all of the children who come for story hour. He always makes sure that he is following the rules, but one day an emergency happens. Readers must ask themselves: are there good reasons to sometimes break the rules? This story would be perfect to read to preschoolers or kindergartners who have never been to the library before. It shows the rules that most libraries require students to follow, but it also helps them see that sometimes it is okay to break those rules when emergencies happen. I would read this book to my students before they took a trip to the library during the first few days of school. We could talk about the rules and mannerisms of the library, and then we could all take a class field trip to explore it together!

Library Lion and understand feelings and actions
Library Lion - Michelle Knudsen,Kevin Hawkes

I had never heard of this book, until I began visiting my CT's classroom and she taught a unit revolving around this text. If you have never read this book by Michele Knudsen it is one to go on the must read list. This book is about a librarian, Miss Merriweather, who is very particular about her rules for the library. The aide in the library, Mr. McBee is also pretty particular, but he becomes jealous when this new friend the "lion" begins visiting the library daily. Mr. McBee's feelings cause him to take actions he would most likely not normally take. This is an upset to the lion who also has to choose the best actions for his feelings. I won't spoil the story but the book has a great ending and will have students connecting feelings and actions better than before. Library Lion is leveled at 2.8 on the accelerated reader system.

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen

This book is about a lion that one day comes to the library. There aren't any rules about lions not being allowed, so he stays and enjoys story time, and even helps out around the library.

It's a nice story, a touching one, and even teaches a lesson. Sometimes, it is okay to break the rules.

Library Lion - Michelle Knudsen,Kevin Hawkes The lion helps out at the library in exchange for being allowed to listen to story time. But when he breaks a couple rules, he is afraid the librarians won't let him come back.
