The Greatest Science Stories Never Told
The Greatest Science Stories Never Told: 100 tales of invention and discovery to astonish, bewilder, and stupefy - Rick Beyer

Eh, not really.  I'd heard of a few of these before, specifically the one about the creator of Wonder Woman and the lie detector.

That doesn't stop this from being a good read though.  With each story taking up no more than one 2-page spread (including photos and illustrations), this is science at its most accessible.  Most of the stories revolve around inventions and patents, which might make it more interesting to those who prefer the innovation side of science as opposed to the purely theoretical.

I found the whole thing interesting and I especially liked the vignettes included about the women who helped change the shape of things.  Most importantly, I think, is that the author didn't make a big deal about these women being women; they're there because they deserve to be, because they were amongst the smartest, cleverest, stubbornest or just best placed to have the best perspective.

Highly recommended for anyone interested even a little bit about science and technology.

How Many Elephants in a Blue Whale? - Marcus Weeks

A small independent chain here is shutting down one location, but it's in a pain in the butt area of town (probably why it's shutting) and I couldn't con MT into going with me (so he could sweat the parking).  Until today, when I got an email from them saying starting at 10am you could buy all the books that would fit into a box for $30.  He sighed heavily but grabbed his car keys.

We got there when they opened and they pointed to the boxes - they were big boxes.  If we didn't want to go the box route, everything was $2.  Snort - of course we wanted the box; we I was sooo gonna fill the box.

I tried.  It was my first "everything you can fit for $x" sale and it turns out with those parameters I was open to all sorts of titles I'd normally pass up.  MT picked out three books for himself in about 15 seconds (how???) and then ferried my stacks back to the register for me and generally hovered in that way only bored husbands and teenagers can do.

Once I'd been through every shelf, (hovering be damned) I ended up with 17 books.  I'd have gone for a second pass, but a combination of the vein in MT's forehead and the metered parking running out brought me to the register.  They packed the books into the box and there was an embarrassing amount of space left; I'm such a rookie.

Next time...

(I included the covers of the more interesting titles above, except the first three - those came in the post this week.)

I usually do a running tally, but I think I'm just going to leave it at the TBR pile got bigger.  ;)

Have a great weekend everyone.

Sale on Amazon US of course - sorry anyone who doesn't get those prices due to border annoyances. And since these are from the past three weeks, some might no longer be on sale - the Lancashire Witches isn't, sorry, I would add that first!

Usually I'd copy/paste the names into the text area but I am feeling SO lazy (not to mention currently having little free time, sigh) that I'm just gonna whap them into the "add book" area.

Also I totally realize I was only recently grumbling about having to remove unread books to free up ereader space so yes, here we go, I again add to my problem. Heh, such fun that no one can actually see how many TBR are on my virtual shelf! Er, unless I share them in here of course.

Hmm, only just now realized that I bought two military themed books and military history usually isn't my thing. Both were recommended to me by others though, so there's that.

The Greatest War Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from Military History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy (History Channel)
The Greatest War Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from Military History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy (History Channel) - Rick Beyer A collection of short historical essays purporting to cover little-known events to "astonish, bewilder and stupefy."

Unfortunately, most of these events are really well-known and the essays are neither very exciting nor too accurate, with assertions ranging from comically oversimplified to downright falsehood.

The Greatest Presidential Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy
The Greatest Presidential Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy - Rick Beyer If you are looking for light hearted historical reading then this is a must. Throughly engrossing little book that you won't be able to put it down once you start reading it. I plan to follow up by reading the author's other two books as well as some of the sources that he utilized in producing this book. Great stuff!
