Caine's Reckoning
Caine's Reckoning - Sarah McCarty

I will put up with a bad book if it's for a challenge and I didn't know what else to read for the category.

Caine is a Texas Ranger and a member of Hell's Eight.  Desi is the woman he rescues and marries.  Desi was repeatedly a victim of trauma and sexual assault.  Does she get time and space to work out her trauma?  Yeah, nope.  This has the trope of the magic penis that heals.  Don't like to be touched?  Well, let's get it on!  It's not romantic, it's abusive.

Then there was the bad guys.  That's it really?  It was too easy.  And it's not helped that there was still the mystery sadistic evil guy that had no name that didn't get his.  He is still free.  And the whole issue of the who/why of Desi and her twin sister Ari (who is not in this book and is alive/dead (who knows!) and suffered/is suffering the same fate that Desi did) kidnapping.  For the length of the book, it left a lot of unanswered questions.  But you know what?  I don't really care and would very much like to burn this trash.  I won't be reading any more of this series.

It's sad that the best thing about this book was Boone, the loyal dog, and Cantankerous, a randy rooster.

I read this for the Romance-opoly Passion Place sun track square

Shadow's Stand (Hell's Eight, #5) by Sarah McCarty
Shadow's Stand - Sarah McCarty

5/7 - I returned this to the library back on the 10th of June, but somehow I managed to forget to review it. I will attempt to write a comprehensive review despite the time gap.

3.5 stars, better than the last Hell's Eight book I read, but still not quite up to the level of Caine's story. Fei Yen is my favourite heroine of the whole series. She and Shadow were a great couple and I loved the way she brought out Shadow's softer side. Why do these Hell's Eight men always think they're cold-hearted bastards who will only bring pain and suffering to the women they love? They always sell themselves short and that gets so frustrating. I loved Fei Yen's expertise with explosives and the enjoyment she seemed to get whilst using them. Not a particularly comprehensive (or cohesive, now that I read back over it) review, but that's about all I can think of regarding memorable scenes and my feelings while reading them

Caine's Reckoning
Caine's Reckoning - Sarah McCarty WORST HEROINE EVER. SHE IS ENRAGING, GOD DAMMIT. OH MY GOD I HATE HER SO MUCH I WISH THE INDIANS HAD MURDERED HER AND HER ENTIRE ROLE IN THIS BOOK WAS AS A CORPSE THEY PASSED ON THEIR WAY TO ANOTHER TOWN. *deep breath* Let me try again...

I see quite a few of my friends have this on their TBR shelves. Let me save you all the trouble - stay away from this fucking book! It could have been so good. But it is not. It is nothing more than the physical proof that women are god damn crazy. The author is crazy for writing this crazy female lead character and all you women are crazy for reading this bullshit.

How does one convince themselves they are a dirty, used up whore and a respectable, well-bred woman deserving of being treated like a goddess? IT IS NOT POSSIBLE. Does that stop this dumb bitch? No. "Oh, I'm such a whore, such a worthless pile of flesh for fucking! But oh, don't look at my ankles, that's scandalous!" ... "You're my husband, you're not allowed to want me sexually!" ... "Treat me with the respect I deserve, by passing me around to all your friends to abuse like I expected!" WTFWTFWTF

Literally everything this woman does results in my going "What the hell... no..." It's driving me batshit crazy. But not even close to the level of crazy this woman reaches. I want to describe how crazy she is, but I can't because a) it would spoil a lot and b) I'm too pissed to waste any more of my life on this god damn nonsense.

Don't read this fucking book. Move on.

Okay.... Interesting. Different. For me anyway.
Caine's Reckoning - Sarah McCarty

Not quite sure how this ended up on my kindle... It's been there for a while. For some reason I thought one of my GR friends liked the series?... but I wouldn't be able to tell you who..
Anyway.
I liked reading a western for a change. Loved the crew. All the bit's of the ranch life was awesome.
Desi and Caine were interesting MC. Their romance is different and very sweet. The character building is done well. The villains are mean- but in an multifaceted way. The Hell's Eight, interesting...I want more of The Hell's Eight!
McCarty did a good job of depicting the hard life of the west, though there were moments where I wondered if anyone would have spoken like that..
It's a good western romance- how authentic? I wouldn't know to be perfectly honest. I actually got most of my western education through movies. And from my POV this is a good one. A rangy, well written, romantic western.

I liked how their relationship grew and how they slowly got to know each other and all that.
The storyline is interesting. But there are a gazillion questions unanswered. And the end was let's throw in another sex scene and solve all their problems and we all set...
The epilogue is rather sweet. And it gave me hopes that we get the answers in the next book. Except how did the Hell's Eight find out who the perpetrators were? Again- too sudden results- especially considering the length of the book.

My absolutely biggest issue?
The smut. First too much of it - well for me at least - and then also most of Caine's and Desi's transactions were set around it- while I loved their banter outside the smut-scenes there was way to little of it for my taste.

I am intrigued enough to read the next book. (I might skim the smut next time around lol)

So if you enjoy smut more than I, this is definitely something to put on your TBR.

Tracker's Sin (Hell's Eight, #4) by Sarah McCarty
Tracker's Sin - Sarah McCarty

3/12 - This didn't feel like a complete book, it felt more like part two of Desi's book Caine's Reckoning. If I hadn't read Caine's Reckoning Tracker's Sin would have made absolutely no sense, more so than any of the other books in the series. At the beginning of the book the story is already halfway through its arc, the rest is just the completion of it.

The story itself was pretty simple, Tracker does his thing and tracks Ari down, saves her, gets her back to the ranch and meanwhile they fall in love. Of course there's an obstacle, he doesn't think he's good enough for her because of his mixed race heritage (that's really all in his mind, Ari never mentions it) and because he resembles the Comanchero band who kidnapped her and Desi (post-traumatic stress puts a halt to a few 'intimate moments').

Not a bad book, just not necessarily a book on its own. I highly recommend that if you have intentions of reading this book you make sure you've read Desi's story first, it will not make sense otherwise.
