Blog Tour and Giveaway for Walking Out of War by Scott Bury

Walking Out of War
by Scott Bury
Genre: Historical Adventure, War

Ukraine, 1944: After the Soviets burned the Ukrainian city of Ternopyl to the ground to crush the stubborn Nazi occupiers, they rounded up every remaining Ukrainian man around for the Red Army’s final push on Germany. Maurice Bury, Canadian citizen, Ukrainian resistance fighter and intelligence officer, is thrust once again into the death struggle between Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s USSR.
Fighting across the Baltics in the autumn of 1944 is tough and bloody. Then the Red Army enters Germany, where they’re no longer liberators—they’re the long-feared Communist horde, bent on destruction, rape and revenge. The Communists are determined to wipe Nazism from the face of the earth. And the soldiers want revenge for Germany's brutal invasion and occupation.
Maurice has determined his only way out of this hell is to survive until Nazi Germany dies, and then move home to Canada. But to do that, he’ll have to not only walk out of war, but elude Stalin’s dreaded secret police.

Scott Bury can't stay in one category.
After a 20-year career in journalism, he turned to writing fiction. "Sam, the Strawb Part," a children's story, came out in 2011, with all the proceeds going to an autism charity. Next was a paranormal short story for grown-ups, "Dark Clouds."
The Bones of the Earth, a historical fantasy, came out in 2012. It was followed in 2013 with One
Shade of Red, an erotic romance.
Army of Worn Soles, published in 2014, tells the true story of Maurice Bury, a Canadian drafted into the USSR's Red Army to face the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
Invited to participate in two Kindle Worlds, he published Torn Roots: A Lei Crime Kindle World Novella and Jet - Stealth: A Jet Kindle World Novella. Both came out in July 2015.
In between writing books and blog posts, Scott helped found an author's cooperative publishing venture, Independent Authors International. He is also President of author's professional association BestSelling Reads.

One Shade of Red
One Shade of Red - Scott Bury I received a free ARC copy by the author to proofread it and to provide an honest review.

This book was intended to be a spoof of "Fifty Shades of Grey", but I can tell you that Scott Bury managed to write a book that is much better, more interesting, deeper, and better written than the whole Fifty Shades Trilogy put together.
Damian is a naïve young man that faces a whole summer with the uncertainty of what those months would bring. Worried about making enough money for his next year at college, he couldn't imagine that taking care of his flatmate Nick's business when he left the city would lead him to live the summer of his life. Meeting Ms. Alexis Rosse would turn his world upside down. The expected uneventful summer becomes a real adventure, with plenty of hot sex encounters, love issues, handling friends and overcoming obstacles.
This book is extremely well-written; so well-written that it flows quite easily, hooking the reader right from the beginning. I had real problems to stop reading it, and indeed it just took me three seatings to read the whole book.
One of the best things about this book is that every single character has a distinctive voice, and that fits really well into the story and makes characterisation very good. You can know who is talking and get the mental picture just by reading how they talk. It's brilliant.
This is an erotic book, so yes, there is sex. A lot of sex. Knowing the previous books by Scott Bury, I must admit that I was a bit surprised. However, now I can safely say that he did a great job; the sex scenes are steamy hot and don't interfere with the plot story. I mean, this book is not only about the sex; it deals a lot with Damian's struggles with his feelings and with trying to do the right thing.
So kudos to Scott Bury for creating a well-crafted erotic tale about love and the ways of the world, as the Classics would say. While reading this book, I didn't think even once about Fifty Shades, and you would agree with me that there is no better compliment than that.
5 well-deserved stars for a memorable story.

The Bones of the Earth (Dark Age Trilogy, #1)
The Bones of the Earth (Dark Age Trilogy... The Bones of the Earth (Dark Age Trilogy, #1) - Scott Bury I have absolutely loved this book and I was very sad when I reached the ending. Javor, the main protagonist, is a very special character and it is amazing to see the story and events develop through his eyes. Great book for lovers of both fantasy and historical fiction.
When the village where Javor lives gets attacked by a hideous creature, Javor's life will change dramatically. Join him in his way to Constantinople, a trip that will be full of dangers, finding enemies, dragons, and other creatures. Little by little, he will learn more about why the events happening are happening like that. People think that Javor is weird, but while you read, you discover why he is so special, and that was something that I loved about this book. It is sweet, it is innocent, and it is completely honest. One of my favourite characters from now on.
I highly recommend this book.
The only bad thing I found, and that's why I removed one star, is that there are many typos and some missing words. It doesn't make the reading difficult, but it can be a bit annoying.

The Bones of the Earth (Dark Age Trilogy, #1)
The Bones of the Earth (Dark Age Trilogy... The Bones of the Earth (Dark Age Trilogy, #1) - Scott Bury [Review rewritten for greater accuracy and clarity]

This is a curious book. The setting is unusual, sixth century Eastern Europe, although it didn’t feel any different from a great many other fantasy works in that respect, at least not in the early parts. The protagonist, Javor, is an interesting character, an immature fifteen year old who doesn't fit in at all with his family and society and is shunned as an outcast. Of course, he has strange powers, not yet fully developed and... Well, I think we can see where this is going. Now there's nothing wrong with retelling a familiar story, and this one has some nice original twists. Still, it does feel rather hackneyed at times. There’s the wise old mentor guiding the young man along and encouraging him to fulfil his true potential. There’s the inevitable quest, there are a couple of magic gizmos and some monsters to be defeated - and no, there’s never any doubt that they will be defeated. However unoriginal the trappings of the story, though, it’s refreshing to see a hero who is, in many ways, very unhero-like. He seems, to my inexpert eyes, to be almost autistic in his aversion to social interaction. This might be a part of his abilities or it might be unconnected, but it’s interesting.

So, having defeated a few monsters, the hero and his mentor are about to set off on a journey to Constantinople when - the book ends with the dispiriting words: ‘End of Part 1. The remainder of The Bones of the Earth: Initiation Rites can be purchased for 99 cents on Smashwords.’ Well, no it can’t. If I want to read the rest of the story, it seems my only option is to pay the full cost of the whole book, having already paid for what is apparently only a sample. If I were enthralled by the story so far, perhaps I might do that, but so far, while it has its moments, it's a bit meh, so I think I'll pass. One star for a DNF.

Sam, the Strawb Part - Scott Bury Sam, the Strawb Part - Scott Bury This was a beautifully written children’s book. Loved the story and can really see the children getting into it. Their imaginations are fantastic and I am sure there will be a lot of children pretending to be Sam, the Strawb Part.Sam is a young boy whom loves strawberries and uses his wits and cunning to steal strawberries from unsuspecting mothers at the grocery store. Because of his appearance they feel for Sam and hand over their strawberries. The East Canada Fruit (Fool) Company is not impressed and hires a pirate to capture and stop Sam from stealing all the strawberries. This is where the adventure begins. The chase sets off around the country and Sam is always one step ahead. This is Robin Hood meets Pirates of the Caribbean for a children’s book. Fantastic and another fantastic fact is that all proceeds of this book goes to charity, Children at Risk, a registered charity that supports families of children with autism spectrum disorders. What a wonderful cause, so please help support and read this lovely story.
