Puliter Prize winning novel 'Less'

Less by Andrew Sean GreerLiterary awards are rarely sufficient motivation for me to choose one title over another — the enjoyment of literature being notoriously subjective — but since Less was already on my wishlist, its recent Pulitzer Prize win firmed up my decision to purchase.

What immediately struck me was the unusual narrative structure… predominantly first-person present tense (identity undisclosed) yet omnipresent.

From where I sit, the story of Arthur Less is not so bad.

Look at him: seated primly on the hotel lobby’s plush sofa, blue suit and white shirt, legs knee-crossed so that one polished loafer hangs free of its heel. The pose of a young man.

But on occasion more like third-person. It is both confounding and intriguing. Continue reading >>

Andrew Sean Greer got Pulitzer prize with "Less"
Less - Andrew Sean Greer

"Less" by Andrew Sean Greer got a Pulitzer prize. A bit unusual.

It is also a novel with gay element. Another plus.

Looking forward to this one.

Kindle Firsts for June 2017 (free ARC from Amazon Imprints)
The Man of Legends - Kenneth Johnson
Soho Dead (The Soho Series Book 1) - Greg Keen
Stillhouse Lake - Rachel Caine
Wives of War - Soraya M. Lane
The Man Who Could Be King: A Novel - John Ripin Miller
Lost in Arcadia: A Novel - Sean Gandert

Amazon prime members get to choose one of these free and ahead of their publication date.  As has been true all of this year and last year, every choice has been published under an Amazon imprint.

For myself, nothing appeals (not even the dystopian that I can easily see happening -- ugh -- the description on product page is just quoted praises if you don't click to see more).

So for June, I've downloaded "none of the above."

Catholic priests participation on genocide
Chaplains of the Militia: The Tangled Story of the Catholic Church During Rwanda's Genocide - Chris McGreal,Sean Runnette,Audible Studios

Today UN has a memorial on genocide in Rwanda.

I could understand hate. But hate enough to rape and kill is a whole different level that I don't understand at all.

What going through the mind of the Catholic priests who gave list of names to be murdered is another puzzle to me.

I do not trust any Catholic priests, bishops or nuns, for there are too many child rapists and friends of child rapists in the Catholic church. But I wouldn't think of them as someone who could commit genocide, but I was wrong. Catholic priests and nuns have enough religious delusion in them to do all sort of shitty things that normal people would not even  think of. That's the power of religious faith.

It make me question humanity when I read about genocide. Neighbors killing neighbors and husbands killing wives.

Don't let the past be forgotten, or we would not see the warning sign for the next one.
