The Age of Light
The Age of Light - Whitney Scharer

DNF.

I just can't.

Lee Miller deserves a better biography, even if it is a fictional one.

DNF @ 114 out of 375 pages.
The Age of Light - Whitney Scharer

I throw in the towel.

We have completely abandoned the historical part and any sort of character development and for the last 30 pages all we learn about is Lee's various desires for Man Ray, or really any man that reminds her of him even just a bit.

These aren't the droits I was looking for.

Reading progress update: I've read 52 out of 272 pages.
Truth and Bright Water - Thomas King

This seems to be a very similar book to Medicine River. Similar characters, similar setting, similar everything... It's ok, but I am not sure I want to stick with this one.

Neither Medicine River nor this one seem to have the magic and pull that The Back of the Turtle had.

I also have King's Green Grass, Running Water on Mt. TBR, which seems to also be set in Medicine River and I might just sample that one before deciding whether to read it or pass.

The Book of Disquiet
The Book of Disquiet - Richard Zenith,Fernando Pessoa

DNF.

God, this was awful. I wanted to punch that hateful little shit of a narrator/main character/Pessoa on the nose within the first ten pages of the book.

I get that the cynicism is an expression of the guy's struggle to find something to value in his life, but that doesn't make him a metaphor of the modern literary hero or indeed anything I can value.

Apparently, a lot of people have found some deep insights in his ramblings. Good on them. To me, the narrator's (or Pessoa's??) ignorant, arrogant, disdainful stream-of-consciousness blether held more cliches than a piece of hackneyed journalism, signifying nothing.

And if the intro to the book is correct and the MC is an alter ego of Pessoa himslef (who hadn't actually published this in his lifetime), then that is rather sad.

Reading progress update: I've read 10%.
The Book of Disquiet - Richard Zenith,Fernando Pessoa

I have a feeling that this month will be all about books that just don't work for me.

A veritable celebration of DNFs, if you like.

:(
