I am not impressed.
The women characters are pretty vapid apart from Olga, Pasternak's muse. However, even she is so far only defined by her relationship with Pasternak.
I don't know why, but I'm really noticing how this book would fail the Bechdel test in every scene so far.
Also, I'm not interested in the writing style. It's aggravatingly a lot like chick-lit and I also have issues with other aspects of the tone.
I throw in the towel.
We have completely abandoned the historical part and any sort of character development and for the last 30 pages all we learn about is Lee's various desires for Man Ray, or really any man that reminds her of him even just a bit.
These aren't the droits I was looking for.
This seems to be a very similar book to Medicine River. Similar characters, similar setting, similar everything... It's ok, but I am not sure I want to stick with this one.
Neither Medicine River nor this one seem to have the magic and pull that The Back of the Turtle had.
I also have King's Green Grass, Running Water on Mt. TBR, which seems to also be set in Medicine River and I might just sample that one before deciding whether to read it or pass.
DNF.
God, this was awful. I wanted to punch that hateful little shit of a narrator/main character/Pessoa on the nose within the first ten pages of the book.
