Review: 30 Days of Night
30 Days of Night - 'Ben Templesmith','Steve Niles'

This was okay. There was a full cast, but they didn't do enough to bring the story to life. I was left wondering and couldn't picture much save for what I remembered from the movie version.

A group of vampires come up with the brilliant idea too use a small town in Alaska as a  smorgasbord for the 30 days they experience zero daylight. Never once stopping to think of the consequences of destroying an entire town.

There are shenanigans and the townspeople vary between fighting back and hiding until an "higher up" vampire comes to town and rips the group a new collective asshole because of their stupidity. More shenanigans and one of the townspeople uses the blood of a vampire to turn himself so that he can take out the group and save his wife.

Great concept. Good movie. Audioplay, meh.

Classic horror comic collection – no real surprises but reasonably good
Winnebago Graveyard - Alison Sampson,Ste... Winnebago Graveyard - Alison Sampson,Steve Niles

Taking place in middle America, a family are on holiday in their Winnebago and encounter a bunch of evil-worshippers with unsurprising deadly consequences.

Quite clearly illustrated, this works quite well although a bit too colourful for my liking. It's good enough without being anything particularly special in my opinion. Lovers of horror comics will probably enjoy it.

Freaks of the Heartland
Freaks of the Heartland - Steve Niles,Greg Ruth
I really enjoyed this graphic novel. We begin with a father who likes his drink, a mother who tries to stick up for her children and son who is silent outside but has lots of emotions inside. The illustrations showcase the gloom and the emotions that hang over the household. You don’t really need to read the words to know how each individual feels as they tread inside the house. The boy must go tend to his brother and at these words, I am wondering if they named one of the livestock “brother.” I am hoping that my guess is correct but as I turn the page and see a large child shackled in a barn, my hatred towards the father grows. It is the conversation that these two brothers have that tells me that love still resides outside in this barn. It is later at night when the boy unshackles his brother, unbeknownst to anyone, so that they can romp and walk through the fields together that I have hope for these two boys.

The next morning, father is planning to matters into his own hands as he takes his rifle down from the wall. When mother says, “Maybe if we didn’t treat them like animals they wouldn’t act like animals.” I am startled as she said “them” so there is more than one individual being treated like the boy in the barn. What occurs out in the barn made me wonder who the freak was in the novel and how many more freaks I would read about before this novel was over.

This is one of those novels where you wonder how things will play themselves out. Why is the boy’s brother being held in the barn and who else was in hiding? What would happen in the final pages of this book? It was hard not to look.

You Simply Must Meet Dante
October Faction Volume 2 - Steve Niles

I am loving this series so much that I almost hate to read the last volume I have. I know it will take forever for my library to get Volume 4. This installment continues the Allen family saga. The children are still trying to convince their parents to start ghost hunting again and Lucas, the werewolf family friend, seems to be hanging around waiting for a decision. Dante, the monster who was adopted in the first volume, remains my favorite. He is like a 10 year old in an adult body and he is enjoying having a family for probably the first time in his life. The only reason this got 4/5 instead of 5/5 like the first is because something happens to Mr. Allen in this volume which I think isn't explained very well and which is wrapped up too quickly. As always though, the artwork remains as some of my favorite amongst all of the graphic novels I read. If you love horror, you have to give this series a try.

I am using this for my werewolf square for 2017 Halloween Bingo.

An Awesome Accidental Discovery!
October Faction Volume 1 - Damien Worm,Steve Niles

I have accidentally found a new horror graphic novel to love on and the timing couldn't be better. I had to run into my library to pick up a hold the other day and an usual, caught myself in the "new" section. I saw the first three volumes of "The October Faction" and all I needed was to look at one of the covers and I knew all three were headed home with me! "The October Faction" tells the story of a family of misfit/orphan monster hunters. The books provides with witches, warlocks, werewolves and some other characters I am still learning about. The two children in the book want nothing more than to follow in their retired father's footsteps except he is now a renowned professor of monstrumology and wants nothing to do with his old business. Does that change? You betcha! However, you have to read to find out.

The artwork in this book is dark, creepy and glorious. And the writing just strikes a cord with me. At one point, someone in the book is killed rather unexpected and the perp's comment was something to the effect of "I was going to have to kill him eventually so why drag it out?" An attitude I can understand - not that I'm a killer or anything :)

So basically everyone - go get this book. NOW!!!!!

I am using this as the Monster square on my 2017 Halloween Bingo Challenge.
