The Feast of the Goat - Mario Vargas Llosa,Edith Grossman

The quotation from Ortega y Gasset appeared at the corner of a page, written in his tiny hand: "Nothing that a man has been, is, or will be, is something he has been, is, or will be forever; rather, it is something he became one day and will stop being the next."

This book is excellent. I haven't been as engrossed in a book for a while. I've enjoyed my reads, but I haven't felt this deeply immersed in a time. The characterisation and the plot are top notch.

When I saw him so absorbed in his reading, for he was reading as he walked, my curiosity was piqued. You know how much I love books. I could not have been more astonished. He can not be in his right mind. Do you know what he was enjoying so much? A book about Chinese tortures, with photographs of those who had been decapitated and skinned alive.
