Third Grave Dead Ahead - Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson is back and she’s drinking copious amounts of caffeine to stay awake because Reyes Farrow, the part- human, part- supermodel son of Satan is a bit angry and haunting her every sleeping moment. Now she has to solve a missing persons case, deal with ego-driven doctor, cam her curmudgeonly dad, and take on a motorcycle game while being sleep deprived and set as bait once again.

Once again, the saucy and snarky Charley Davidson has readers eager for another visit from the Grim Reaper in this mega suspenseful and splendidly delightful read. All the characters in this series are strong and full of vibrant life that make it easy for readers to not only connect with them but wanting them to extend their time with them as much as they can. Charley, herself is a fun ‘knock them dead’ heroine that reader can enjoy and live vicariously through with her wicked wit and feisty attitude. The chemistry between her and Reyes burns with lots of fire and sparks fly in every direction in their unconventional yet passionate relationship.

The plot is fast paced and full of exhilarating suspense that has readers turning the pages in anticipation of the next thrilling moment and with Charley’s busy, chaotic life there is never a dull moment to be found. The perfect blend of humor and suspense makes this book a dynamite read that readers can’t get enough of. New characters bring more excitement and adrenaline pumping thrills to the story while recurring characters continue to add their own brand of spice and sauce to the story and readers find themselves locking out the world in order to get the full enjoyable and entertaining experience of this fabulous read.

Third Grave Dead Ahead - Darynda Jones

The darkest as of yet. These books are so enjoyable, the snark and humor abound. This one was a dark version of the past versions. Not only is it dark, but the dark is sad and twisted.

Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3)
Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3) - Darynda Jones,Lorelei King Many have recommend the Charley Davidson series to me and now I’ve finally picked it up. I’ve been really enjoying this series and how things are progressing. The series does need to be read or listened to in order.

Third Grave Dead Ahead is full of mysteries, betrayals, heartache, and revelations.

There is a lot going on in this installment; with three different mystery’s happening, understanding exactly what Charley can do, and Charley now trying to get in and out of the asylum without the biker club catching her.

The overall plot moved along well and now I know a bit more about Charley and her abilities, though we are not finished learning what she can do as the Grim Reaper. Their is much more to discover. I love the friendship Charley has with Cookie. Cookie is a great secondary character and just adds to the story. The witty humor continues to be fun, but at times if feel like Charley uses it to mask her stupid mistakes or maybe it’s her way of copping with a difficult and stressful situation. I do have to say I was rolling my eyes at some of the things Charley did in this one and I will point out that I didn’t care for how this one started, dream sex. Other then that I had fun and enjoyed the story and progress happening.

Reyes of course plays a part in the story. He’s got his own agenda in Third Grave Dead Ahead and once Charley figures it out, it’s almost too late. Then to top it off she’s got her investigations and her family to deal with. She really hasn’t had it easy and dons’t have many people on her side. I was angry and sad for Charley. The men in her life really upset me. What Reyes and her father do, really made me sad.

The Narrator, Lorelei King continues to make this series enjoyable. She does an outstanding job bringing Charley to life and all the characters. I continue to appreciate and like the audio version for this series.

If you enjoy snarky humor and a good mystery then give the Charley Davidson series a try. I highly recommend the audio version for the series.

Darynda Jones - Third Grave Dead Ahead
Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson Series) - Darynda Jones

If you want to start this series, you will want to read the first two book before this one, First Grave on the Right and Second Grave on the Left.

In the Third book in her Grim Reaper series, Darynda Jones takes the reader on a ride from Reyes to a missing person case:

Charley Davidson, aka Grim Reaper (though not the cloaked skull looking one) did not know what the consequences would be by binding Reyes to his physical body. She certainly did not see it leading to her not sleeping for 14 days straight. It's hard for her to function or do work in her private investigators business but she trudges ahead. When a strange missing person case comes to Charley she has to drink as much caffeine as possible in order to stay on her game as it sounds to her that this missing person case is about to become a homicide.

It was about 2013 the last time I read a book in this series, it was one that I remembered enjoying but for some reason stopped reading it. So I decided to pick it up again, and I will say that it is funny how taste can change over a few years. You basically get hit with a sex scene right from the beginning (not my favourite thing in books) and this set the main tone for the majority of this book. I will say that it was easy to pick back up in this series even after three years as Jones does a good job of rehashing the major points from the previous two books in the series

I'm a sucker for a Grim Reaper. I personally have not read too many books that feature a Grim Reaper so I am always interested in seeing different authors interpretation of that character. I find that Charlie is the portal to heaven interesting and I wonder if that aspect can be developed further later in the series. I also find it interesting that Charley does not know the extent of her powers, other than talking to the departed, and that she has not taken the time to really learn what she can do. I also hope that her additional powers are developed later in the series.

I can say that I am not fan of Charley for the most part of the book, I just found her pretty whiny and maybe a little too much of a smart ass. Maybe all her snarky comments was just Jones playing up her lack of sleep in the book. I cannot remember her in the previous books and what she was like, but I do remember liking her, so it is possible that Jones is really trying to make Charley as real as possible. I know I would be barely (and I really mean not) hanging on without sleeping for 14 days. However, Charley does have her redeeming characteristics of putting herself in the line of danger so that others can survive or do not get hurt. Can you enjoy a book and not really like the main character? I would say in this instance yes, as I did find myself enjoying the book, just with more eye rolls that usual as I read it when Charley would have a very immature, stupid or extremely bad timed comment.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, minus the main character, so I'll see how things goes in the fourth book to really help me decide if I will go on from there (I checked and there are eight books so far in this series, that is serious commitment if I do not like the main character).

Enjoy!!

Finished: Third a Grave Dead Ahead — Uh, okay.
Third Grave Dead Ahead (Charley Davidson #3) - Darynda Jones,Lorelei King

This series continues to underwhelm, but yes, I'm going to keep listening.

At at this point I think I can officially label Charlie TSTL. She's ridiculous. 'Everyone is trying to kill me, but let me ditch my protection!' Then whines about people thinking she can't walk and chew gum at the same time. There's a reason for that!

And how many times is her useless father going to have to betray her before she stops making excuses for him and acting like he's been a good father all her life? She still says she could always count on him and he was her rock when that was clearly never true.

And UGH, the deaths in thus book. I know they don't actually go away, but still!
