Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho
Veronika Decides to Die - Margaret Jull Costa,Paulo Coelho

“An Awareness of Death Encourages Us to Live More Intensely’

When I first read ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho I was not impressed, even though its considered one of his best work. Also I had no intention of reading any of his books either. That is to say I never planned to read - Veronika Decides to Die it happened just like that, out of blue. And now I am impresses with this author. I really like this book it has so many things to say to us. Veronika a perfectly well educated fine young lady one day decides to die. Why? Because she is fed up of living her monotonous life wherein nothing seems to change or may be she can’t change anything. As planned she takes her sleeping pill and next thing she finds herself admitted to a hospital in Villette, where usually insane people get admitted. She has got just a weeks time to live because her heart is weak enough to fail any instant but this one week not only changed her approach towards life but also changed few others as well who lived there and were reluctant enough leave that place. This book made me restless enough while reading but in the end I was satisfied with it.

Veronika decides to die
Вероника решает умереть - Paulo Coelho

I read Veronika decides to die yesterday. I don’t know what was expecting but it wasn’t what I found when I read it.

I watched the movie some time ago and I liked it, it wasn’t good but it wasn’t a terrible movie either, so I just thought that maybe the book was better and I would like it. Truth is I didn’t. It was very monotonous and it didn’t cacth my atention, I was half through it when I couldn’t stand it anymore and I wanted to leave it half read. But I have this thing with leaving books unfinished, and I couldn’t do it, I kept reading and readng until the end.

I don’t know it wasn’t the kind of book I would choose, and I never thought I would say this, but I prefer the movie, the book is not good. NOT GOOD.

Veronika Decides to Die - A Review
Вероника решает умереть - Paulo Coelho

I just don't... get it.
This is one of those book that many of my friends seemed to love but I didn't. I liked it, sure. It dragged in the first half and became boring but then it picked up pace in the second one. I kind of enjoyed it. And there are many things that annoyed me.
Veronika's reasons to suicide are absolutely ridiculous. Dr. Igor bored me with all the talking about Vitriol which was confusing and didn't make sense. I didn't like Veronika and Eduard's relationship. There are many WTF moments that I lost count.
I also noticed some of the exact same dislikes I had with the first book I read by him, The Alchemist.
But to be fair, there are some thing I liked in this book. The philosophy was good and the moral of the story too.
It is just that the dislikes I have with this book are more than the likes.
So, I'm not sure I will try any other book written by Coelho. He just doesn't seem to be an author that I will like his writing.

2.5 stars. Meh. It was okay.

Challenge Day 8 - Most overrated book
Вероника решает умереть - Paulo Coelho

This was the only Coelho book I managed to swallow whole. I've tried so hard and so many and it just didn't work. As a brazilian, having this writer as our international little literary star makes me wince.

His work is incomprehensible, boring and over the top. He wants to be Khalil Gibran with excessive drama, flair and no context whatsoever, then giving the readers speeches that his books have less literary content and more background philosophy and so they might be misunderstood.

I call BS.
