Fantastic Mr. Fox and Other Animal Stories - Stephen Fry,Quentin Blake,Hugh Laurie,Roald Dahl
For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle

I have always been a fan of Roald Dahl. Sadly, up to this point I had never read Fantastic Mr. Fox or The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me. This is a shame, because these were my two favorites in this collection. So glad I rectified that tragedy.

Anyway, this collection contains Fantastic Mr. Fox, Esio Trot, The Enormous Crocodile, and The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me. The first was amazing. It was so entertaining and Mr. Fox's character was so charming, you can't help but root for him throughout the story. I may be a little biased, because this story was read by Chris O'Dowd whose voice I absolutely love. I used to put on the show Puffin Rock before going to sleep because his voice is so soothing to me. Weird, but true.

Moving on, Esio Trot is rather odd. I've read it before, but I still cringed at the idea. It's meant to be funny and lighthearted, but if you give it anymore than two seconds thought, it's very creepy. Still well written, but just a little too creepy. Geoffrey Palmer does a great job reading this one.

The Enormous Crocodile is funny as well. Another one I have read before, but still enjoyed hearing again (especially since Stephen Fry read it for the audiobook). Entertaining book. Not a huge fan of the ending, but it is still good.

And then there is The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me. I actually was not familiar with this one before getting this audiobook, but oh my goodness it was my absolute favorite. I loved it. It was the perfect amount strange, weird, funny, odd, and hilarious, which is what I love about Dahl's stories. Absolutely fantastic. Also loved Hugh Laurie's reading of it.

As with any Roald Dahl story, there are some things that may not be a good fit for certain readers. Drunk foxes, crocodiles trying to eat children, and the like. Just a note for those who may not be entertained by such sillliness.

Overall, this is a fantastic audiobook read by a star-studded cast of talented individuals. Entertaining and fun on the whole (even though Esio Trot is so weird). Great book. Only downside to the audiobook is that you miss out on the illustrations, but you get to listen to some amazing readings, so it's a bit of a tradeoff.

Great Story and Characters
Animal Attraction - Patricia Rosemoor

Detective Ethan Grainger gave his new partner a distinctive stare. Isabelle was his new partner after losing the best partner he ever had- Shade. Ethan recognized the murdered victim- Alderman DeAndre Booker.from the West side, Ethan wondered what Booker was doing so far from home. The man wasn’t dressed for a  night out at one of the clubs. Booker was also elected Vice Mayor by the city council. Booker had spent the last couple years working on getting jobs for inter city kids instead of them turning to gangs. Ethan was anxious to leave so that he could find Luc and get the man’s thoughts on the new but familiar murder. Ethan took some photos at the scene . especially of the body, of the dead mans face and ripped out throat. Than he pulled out his notebook and took notes. He got everything he could from the forensic findings, everything the officers on duty had gathered from the crowd or the other side of the crime scene tapes. Isabelle said she would call the Lakeside Zoo and see if any wolves or big animals were missing. Coyotes were not the only thing that worked for Cezar Lazare he had plenty of big cats including his family which were panther shifters. No one in Chicago PD new about the Kindred which were animal shifters. Or the true nature of their casino. Not unless you were invited to the lower deck where you could lose your soul to Lazare. The lower deck was cloaked by magic to the unsuspecting . As much as he hated the Ark he needed to go. Lazare did influence local politicians. Ethan had been avoiding shape shifting Kindred. Avoiding direct contact with Lazare’s daughter who had been Shade’s woman and was carrying Shade’s child now. Despite his vow to Shade he would make sure she and the baby were alright but Nuala blamed Ethan for Shades death. Ethan would like to forget her kind. Yet Ethan found himself attracted to Nuala. He’d checked on her through Shade;s twin Skye. Luc was Nuala’s half brother. Luc had help find the monster who had killed Shade as he was protecting Luc’s mom Elizabeth who had raised Luc human. There were shifter fights still going on even after Lazarre had promised Skye he would stop them? Skye was all about stopping the fights and taking care of the injured animals. Nuala time with Shade had been life altering . He’d shown her there was a different way to live. Ethan loved Shade like a brother. Him being murdered like Ethan’s real brother a decade ago losing SHade the same way had torn open wounds that never healed. Ethan had unresolved and highly inappropriate feelings for Nuala. Luc was the head of security for The Ark. Luc said he would put out feelers for anyone who had a problem with Alderman Booker. Ethan didn’t like Kindred or the operation at The Ark. Ethan’s failure to find his brother Mike’s killer still haunts him ten years later. Nuala decided to to move to Shade’s apartment after talking with Ethan about a different way of Maeve being raised and in a different place. Shade had been killed when he went to Elizabeth  to ask some questions- Luc’s mom- and is killed saving her life. Nuala was very attracted to Ethan and when he kissed her she kissed him back during that kiss he ingested some of Nuala’s blood and could w hear Kindred’s thoughts. Than when he pulled back Nuala hit him.

I loved this book What a different take on shifters giving up their souls and taking human souls. But I do like the old shifter books but till loved this one as it was a great story. I loved how Nic was basically surly and quiet but he loved his sister Nuala and would do anything to keep her safe. I loved Nuala and Ethan together and how they interacted together. I also loved how Cezar was the loving parent this time and the mother could basically care less about her children and was all about hre things/ That was a change. I loved the pace and plot of this book.  I loved Ethan was willing to do anything to save Nuala and Maeve. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend it.

Mini Book Haul, Pet Death, Distractions, & Anxiety

Trigger Warning: Animal death, though no photos of a dead animal, just my last photo of her alive. Long blog, but I promise there is book related content as well.

My hamster Mogget was put on death watch a few days ago. We had to move her to a smaller enclousure, because old age was making it hard for her to get around. Well on the 4th, in the morning, she became unable to move and fell into a deep sleep, her breaths slowed down and right before the end, she opened her eyes one last time and I feel like she looked at me to say goodbye. I'm not sure if she was aware of anything, but it is comforting to believe she realized she wasn't alone and was able to go without being scared.

[In a deep sleep and I hope she felt comfortable]

Patrick (my husband) helped me bury her in a spot I like outside. She is in a place where I can imagine fairies or something else magical lives. Whether you believe that, it is a nice thought, regardless. We buried her between the tree with the vine and the rock covered in moss.

After that, to get my mind off things, Patrick helped me get rid of a bunch of stuff we've been procrastinating donating/tossing. (By help, I mean he did it all and I supervised hehe)

[Photo was taken a while ago. Might be hard to tell, but the tree in the middle that has vines. She is now in front of that, behind the rock.]

As you can imagine, I was really upset all day (still am) and just wanted to distract myself, play with our other furry butts, clean...etc. In the photo, we're trying to go through DVDs and our cat Apollo just wants to play in the tote.

[I think she wants to have a Buffy or Farscape marathon!]

My husband is really sweet; he took me to Barnes & Noble as more disctraction so I could get 2 books I really wanted. They were having another buy 2 get 1 free sale, but that man was there again and I had a panic/anxiety episode and refused to check out with him. (See previous blog about the man who was rude to me there last time.)

Patrick offered to do it alone, but I did not want to deal with the buy 2 get 1 fiasco all over again with the same rude cashier. (They didn’t have signs up again!) Right in the store, I went online and bought 3 books for my Kindle, through Amazon (of course) and paid less than what I would have with the buy 2 get 1 sale. (Actually spent only 3$ more what 1 book would have cost.)

Ugh! I love those books I wanted so much (despite not reading them yet lol) and I love Kindle books, but I really wanted the physical books to add to my physical collection of the books I already had by the same author. All is well. I will look out for the physical copies one day online (used & lower priced than what B&N was charging.)

B&N pretty much lost a customer while that guy is working the register.

The books I got is from the Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) series by Makoto Shinkai. 2 light novels, 1 manga. Japan calls books based on anime or manga “Light novels.”

There is a full length animated movie, 3 manga based on the movie, 1 light novel based on the anime/movie, 1 light novel that is side stories, 1 manga that is based on the side stories. Phew. It sounds confusing.

The movie is so beautiful and I loved it so much. The manga based on the movie wasn't as impactful as the movie was, but I really enjoyed it, too. It really was a touching story for me. The artwork is stunning. The movie made me cry at the end. I just had to have the novels, and the manga based on the side story.

It is the 2nd largest grossing domestic film in Japan (That is all movies, not just anime!) and the fourth-largest ever, behind Titanic and Frozen. 11th grossing non-English film in the USA. (At the time of writing this.) Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 97% & 4.6/5 rating. IMDB.com is at 8.4/10.

That should tell you how much this movie & books impacted people. Listen up, folks! Anime, cartoons, and animated films, comics, graphic novels, manga and all that are not just for children! I’m playing this up because I want you to watch the movie and then read the manga, then the novels! Go do it!

My collection so far:
Vol 1-3 Your Name manga. (Follows the anime pretty closely!)

The Your Name Movie (On Vudu.com. But I want the Limited Edition Bluray that comes packaged in a holographic art box, comes with a hardcover art book, 2 soundtracks (English & Japanese ver.) and is just stunning, but it is so pricey!!)

[This is what you get in the limited edition! I know I can buy the soundtracks alone probably, but I really want that art book!]

Your Name light novel on Kindle (It is supposed to follow the anime/manga pretty closely, but with added background info...etc.

Your Name: Another Side: Earthbound light novel on Kindle (Based on characters from the anime/manga and some of their side stories...etc.)

Your Name: Another Side: Earthbound manga on Kindle (The manga of the above.)

Yes, I'm a nerd.

(Do me a favor, give your animals (if you have any) a great big cuddle if they will let you.)
