The Bossy Gallito
Bossy Gallito / El gallo de bodas: (Bilingual) - Lucia M. Gonzalez,Lulu Delacre

A cumulative tale. I'm not someone who thinks all books have to teach kids something or have a good lesson/moral at the end, but I wasn't a fan of the way this story resolves. It seems to boil down to just know the right people and you'll get what you want.

I will say though I do not have the cultural knowledge to understand the context of this tale, so there's definitely a chance I have misinterpreted it and that my understanding is completely wrong.

La Princesa and the Pea - Susan Middleton Elya,Juana Martinez-Neal

La Princesa and the Pea by Susan Middleton Elya is a retelling of the famous story "The Princess and the Pea" from the perspective of a different culture. The story is drawn with a massive influence on the culture in Peru, but the text is bilingual. Throughout the story, there are words in both English and Spanish. I believe the book would be excellent for students who are transitioning from speaking Spanish to English as well as for students who are interested in exploring a different language. I would use this in my classroom to help my students learn about different cultures! We would have a week where we read stories with the same storyline from an arrange of different cultures. As a class, we would compare and contrast all the books we've read. I believe teachers play a huge part in making students aware of various ethnicities, cultures, and traditions.

Little Chickies/ Los Pollitos
Canticos: Los Pollitos / Canticos: Little Chickies - Susie Jaramillo

Little Chickies is a bilingual picture book! Readers can enjoy the text in English or Spanish. The text is based on a traditional Spanish nursery rhyme, and has even been translated into song. I would love to include this book in my classroom for multiple reasons. I think it is very important to provide our ELL students with texts that are in their native language. This text is so very beneficial, because they can compare both versions of the book at the same time. I would love to incorporate this book as a cultural experience for children. I think exposing our young learners early on can broaden their understanding of others and help foster an inclusive classroom. I would allow my students to compare this text with other traditional nursery rhymes and songs.

Mi Gato, Mi Perro/ My Cat, My Dog (Bilingual Spanish English Edition)

Mi Gato, Mi Perro/ My Cat, My Dog (Bilingual Spanish English Edition) - Katrina Streza A cute book with simple illustrations and simple sentences chosen to help children learn a few basic words in Spanish. I enjoyed the read a bit more than I expected to, and think this would be an excellent choice for a book to keep on hand for very young children that you are wanting to teach Spanish to. For older children though, it may not be the best choice.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for review consideration.
