She's rescued by Simon, an Indigenous person and activist for First Nations causes. His care and concern are comforting, and she finds herself attracted to him. But the attraction abruptly ends when they confront an eagle poacher who sells the feathers and body parts on the black market.

The poacher is Simon's cousin and he's not about to turn him over to the authorities. Cultural differences emerge and principles clash as Mattie realizes she has to decide between justice for the bird and her feelings for Simon.

A very thoughtful and unexpected gift from our realtor. He saw it in a used book store and thought we'd like it.

Have just returned to chilly Massachusetts after spending the past week in Florida doing plenty of birding, getting a bit of culture at the Salvador Dali museum, and getting my sports fix by attending a Red Sox spring training game and a Tampa Bay Lightning game.

The birding as always was fabulous. Florida definitely has the best birds. We even managed to add three more birds to the life list. Marbled godwit, Nanday parakeet, and a great horned owl.

The owl was a treat, but was too far away for decent photos. Which was a shame because, there was an utterly adorable owlet in the nest with an adult close by.

The godwit was one of those where we had no idea what it was, so had to take some hurried pictures for ID purposes later.

And the parakeets were amazing. They aren't native to the US but colonies have been built up via escapees and there are now enough of them for the American Birding Association to include them in the list of US birds.

Have just got back home after visiting friends and family back in the UK. We had a great time catching up with everyone and celebrating my Dad's 86th birthday, but one of the highlights of our trip was the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs in North Yorkshire.

We saw gannets, razorbills, guillemots (or murres as they're known in the US), kittiwakes, fulmars, and shags. But none of them are as cute as a puffin.

Husband has started to sort out some of our vacation photos. They're mostly scenic views, but he also took a few birding pic too. These were all taken at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, about 50 miles north of Salt Lake City. I've never seen so many ducks in my life.
