Gothic angel morality tales are a thing; who knew?
Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Dark Guardians Fantasy Series Book 1) - Karin Cox

Odd little book. The blurbcraft I saw for this book all called it a paranormal romance, but that really isn't right. It's more dark fantasy or Gothic, like Interview with the Vampire period Anne Rice. The plot concerns a Cruxim, an angel like being that hunts vampires. The novel takes place over the 16th and 18th Centuries, and our cruxim is a man of his time, convinced of his righteousness and utterly bought into the virgin/whore dichotomy.

Which is what makes this so not a romance, because when his now adult ward throws herself at him, begging for him to release her from the nunnery so she can marry and have a life, he completely freaks out. Like oh my God you can't want to have sex you slut! Then of course when he runs off like a big idiot his ward is deflowered and turned into a vampire OH MY GOD THE IRONY.

It's first person, and there isn't much authorial commentary on this, which makes the whole thing interesting indeed. The prose is overheated and formal, which I completely adore for the right subject matter, e.g. tortured angel morality tales. Oh, and there's a sphinx character who is the most impressive mix of sinuous sexiness and alarming bestiality. Bravo.

Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1)
Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1) - Karin Cox What did the title have to do with the book? It was what Adedeo was and I definitely learned a few new words from this book.

What would the main character be likely to do if s/he visited? Talk about how he thought he was the only cruxim in the world. Then he found a female, just like him.

Using information from the book about one of the main characters, rewrote the ending of the book. I would have saved Sabine from the watery grave.

What are the most important relationships in the book? Adedeo / Sabine / Joslyn / Dr. Gandler

Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1)
Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1) - Karin Cox What did you like about this book? Loved the different characters and their history.

What makes the minor characters memorable? If they have important information that adds to the story.

Did you find any flaws in the book? No flaws, other than the one mistake about Sabine.

Consider the main character: what does he or she believe in? Adedeo believes in love and freedom. He wants to rid the world of blood suckers. He wants the humans to be safe.

Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1)
Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1) - Karin Cox Make a list of facts you learned from the story. Adedeo was a vampire slayer. Dr.Gandler collected unusual people for his circus act. Sabine was half woman, half lion. She was a guardian, a Spinx. Josyln lived with nuns. She was turned into a vampire. She loved Adedeo. She is immortal. They were all hundreds of years old.

What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing this book? To entertain us and to take us away from our life into a land of fantasy.

What did you like about it? Just a fun book to drift off into another world.

If you were in a problem situation like one in the book, how would you have acted? I would have battled all the vamps, just like they did. I wouldn't have given up either.

Cruxim: You Are Never Alone (Paranormal Fallen Angels) (Volume 1) - Karin Cox If you could only save one character from the book, which one would it be and why? Sabine, just loved her character. A Spinx, just such a intriguing creature.

Did you find this book a quick read? The book was a quick and fun read. Definitely will look out for other books by this author.

List the characters and describe them. Adedeo - Fallen angel. He was a Cruxim. He searched for Josyln and Sabine, he loved them both. He had wings and great strength.

Sabine - The guardian, she was immortal. She was half woman, half lioness. She was very strong. Only one of her kind. She love Adedeo.

Joslyn - Very beautiful, vampire. She loved Adedeo.

Dr. Gandler - Cruel man that searched for anyone unusual. He operated and them and tortured them. Displayed them in a circus to make money. He wanted to become a vamp.

Was the story credible? The story and characters were credible.
