I'm Traveling Alone
I'm Traveling Alone: A Novel - Samuel Bjork

Why did I wait so long to read this?

There was a time I read a lot of the Scandinavian crime books that were flooding the local book stores, but since my attention has somewhat moved from crime books in general it took me a while to get to this one. I'm glad I eventually got to it.

It was a very good story and some nice characters were introduced, and it looks like it is going to be a great series that I would like to read more about. The case was solid and there was a twist I didn't see coming.

Recommended.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Why did I read this when I have no plans to visit Japan?
Cool Japan Guide: Fun in the Land of Manga, Lucky Cats and Ramen - Abby Denson

I had high hopes for Cool Japan Guide: Fun in the Land of Manga, Lucky Cats, and Ramen by Abby Denson. Some of this stemmed from the fact that this was recommended to me from a trusted source but more so from the fact that I've so enjoyed the travelogues that I've read in the past (especially Lucy Kinsey's). Sadly, this book fell far short of the mark for me. While this is 'marketed' for a young adult audience the cat character that the authors use for Japanese vocabulary lessons (a great idea in theory) was childish in the extreme. The illustrations weren't anything to write home about either but I think they were secondary to the purpose of providing helpful information to the international traveler. In this the authors definitely succeeded although their advice should be taken with a grain of salt as some information could potentially be out-of-date. All in all it was a 2/10 for me although I did have a craving for ramen right after reading it.

A Beautiful Story of Life and Death From a Cat's POV
The Traveling Cat Chronicles - Hiro Arikawa

The connection between man and animals goes so deep. Such a wonderful tale from a cat's POV. Nana, who is a male cat, his tale has the shape of the 7 character so Satoru named him so. Nana was a stray, until an injury left him vulnerable, Satoru rescued him and gave him a home. They form a bond, well the cat deside to stay for awhile, because you know it is always up to the cat. Time passes Satoru and Nana develop an unbreakable bond, even when faced with a great change. Nana and Satoru go on an adventure.
*Spoilers below*
Oh this book ! I really enjoyed the Japanese view on life and death through this cat's eyes. The connection with the people, the earth and ancestors it was beautiful. The end of a life even short was so respected and almost celebrated. Nana readies himself for his transition by training the next generation (kitten) the ways. In the end Nana was always his cat and they will see each other again, when the time comes.

Review ~ Decent collection
Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories - Nancy Christie

Book source ~ NetGalley

There are 18 short stories contained between these covers and not one of them was what I expected. The stories are sad, shocking, surprising and, most times, heart-breaking. They start out one way and end completely different than I expected. By the time I was partway through the collection, I stopped trying to anticipate where the stories were heading and just went with the flow. While each one is a bit bleak for my tastes, there’s no doubt that Nancy Christie has mastered the short story with her wonderful writing and tight plots.

Story titles:

Traveling Left of Center

Alice in Wonderland

The Sugar Bowl

The Shop on the Square

Watching for Billy

The Healer

The Clock

Anything Can Happen

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Misconnections

Skating on Thin Ice

Still Life

The StoryTeller

Exit Row

Waiting for Sara

Beautiful Dreamer

The Kindness of Strangers

Annabelle
