A good cozy read
Murder at the Mansion - Janet Finsilver

Renovations are going on over at the Redwood Cove B&B, so Kelly's boss has her putting up guest in a Victorian mansion he has since it's whale watching season. Kelly's in control of keeping track of the antique items but then she discovers a body and things take a different turn.

Kelly is not real interested in looking for a killer but she hates that they think that Stevie could be blamed since they already think he might have been the one stealing things from the mansion, as well as one other person. So she does a little snooping and that leads her to finding some interesting things along the way. Someone doesn't want her snooping and tries to get rid of her so now the cops are trying to keep her safe as they try and catch the killer.

Second book in the Kelly Jackson mysteries and I really enjoyed it. Kelly just wants to run her B&B but right now that is not happening so she tries to make the most of it. She doesn't really want to get involved in a murder investigation but at the same time she can't help but be a little curious about things going on. It has a great bunch of secondary characters and one of my favorites is the little boy Tommy, he is adorable.

Overall, I think this is a fun series and if you are a fan of cozies you should check out this series!!

Fun start to a series!
Murder at Redwood Cove - Janet Finsilver

Kelly Jackson hates that she is taking over for a dead man, but her company has sent her to run the Redwood Cove Bed & Breakfast. Not long after she gets there she gets wrapped up in what happened to Bob, the man who died. The Silver Sentinels, a group of older individuals who fancy themselves and crime solvers is on the case and fill her in on how they think he was murdered.

Before she knows her curiosity has gotten the better of her and she starts looking into Bob’s last days. Then one of the kids of an employee is almost harmed and she starts thinking they are some how related but what would Tommy have seen to have someone try and kill him. Now she is really on the hunt because she adores Tommy and nobody should want to harm a kid.

Finally after what happen to Tommy the local police start taking what she and the Silver Sentinels have to say about Bob being murder and they soon find out the reason. Now they just have to try and decipher some clues to figure out who it is.

I really like Kelly, she is a blackbelt in taekwondo and even though her parents would rather her be working with them she is determined to make it on her own. She has been cheated on so she is slow to warm up to men, but she is kind of crushing on a co-worker from her company. I really love the Silver Sentinels, they are so adorable. They are the protectors of the town and I thought it was so sweet how they took turns watching out for Tommy. Just a great cast of characters.

It has a great mystery too because I really didn’t figure it being who it was and I like it when I don’t figure it out.

This is a great one for all cozy lovers!

Review: Murder at the Mansion by Janet Finsilver (@JanetFinsilver)

Series: Kelly Jackson Mystery, #2
Publisher: Lyrical Underground
Published: June 7, 2016
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Length: 192 pages

The first book in this series, Murder at Redwood Cove, was a fabulous four star read from a debut author. The combination of a scenic setting, colorful characters, and a unique plot-line served to capture my attention and brought me back for more.

Murder at Redwood CoveAt the end of book one, Kelly Jackson, temporary manager of Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast became the permanent manager with her decision to settle down in the area.  She has just barely returned from her parents home in Wyoming, loaded down with a horse trailer full of her things when she heads over to Resort Internationals other local property, Redwood Heights to assist with doing an inventory in preparation of it's sale.

While she is there, a guest falls down some stairs and swears that she was pushed.  When the same guest ends up murdered the very next day, suspicion falls on everyone who was in the mansion at the time.  And with a recent spate of jewelry thefts at the mansion, everyone is suspect and on edge wondering if the two crimes are connected. Kelly has to call on the Silver Sentinels to help her sort through historical paperwork, find missing suspects and  work to find the guilty party or parties.

I really don't want to spoiler anything too badly, but I just have to say that I was completely fooled by the thief. There were plenty of hints dropped, but I didn't put it together until after Kelly explained. The murderer was a bit of a surprise; I was almost all the way there when they exposed themselves as the killer.  Wooboy, what a moment that was! The reveal was so clever and unexpected that I had to go back and reread it a couple times to make sure that I had it all correct.

Though this book gives us a bit more background on Kelly, as well as the Silver Sentinel individuals, it still defers much of their history to be discovered in coming books. I had a marvelous time in the town of Redwood Cove and can't wait to see what happens next. A great read, I gave it 4 stars.

Netgalley and Kensington Books provided me with this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Fortunes, fineries, and foul play...

It’s whale-watching season in Redwood Cove, and B&B manager Kelly Jackson’s battening down the hatches for the tourist rush at Redwood Heights—a Victorian-style estate owned by her boss. And due to recent jewelry thefts, her duties include keeping track of the many dust-covered artifacts spread throughout the property. But when Kelly finds Sylvia Porter’s lifeless body, menial tasks don’t seem so terrible. Enlisting the help of a ragtag group of brainy retirees, aka the “Silver Sentinels,” Kelly’s on the hunt for clues hidden behind the mansion’s glamorous façade...and for a killer who may want to make history of her next!

Bed, breakfast…and a body!

If it weren’t for the fact that she’s replacing a dead man, Kelly Jackson would love her new job managing the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast on the coast of Northern California. But Bob Phillips did plunge off the cliff to his death…and Kelly’s starting to think it may not have been an accident. Bob’s retired friends—The “Silver Sentinels”—are also on the case, especially when Kelly is attacked…and another body turns up. Kelly has her hands full with overseeing the B&B’s annual Taste of Chocolate and Wine Festival, but she’s also closing in on the killer…who’s ready to send Kelly on her own permanent vacation…

Many cozy mystery series start out with the amateur sleuth working to solve a murder investigation where they are the lead suspect. They investigate because they are afraid that if the real killer isn't found, they will be the one who goes to jail.  Subsequent books will find other reasons for the sleuth to keep solving mysteries, but that very first book is almost always to clear their own name.  Please meet the exception...

Kelly Jackson comes to the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast after the death of it's manager Bob Phillips. The corporate office sent Kelly to sort things out and keep the bed and breakfast running smoothly until a new manager can be found. But when Kelly starts looking into Bob's projects and day to day activities, she realizes something is off and that their might be more to Bob's death.  A stalwart group of seniors who use the conference room for meetings, advised Kelly that they didn't think Bob's death was an accident. After she is attacked and someone tries to injury one of the children living on site, Kelly is positive that Bob was murdered.

We dive right into this story with little background on Kelly, as she arrives at Redwood Cove.  With the exception of Kelly's boss, we meet everyone as Kelly does.  The characters were and vivid, without being overdone. I adored the "Silver Sentinels" and can't wait to find out more about them. The story flowed well, with good pacing right up to the end. And while the case was solved, there are still plenty of mysteries about Kelly and her backstory to solve for future books.

I had fantastic time visiting Redwood Cove and look forward to visiting again soon. This was a firm 4 star read from a new to me author.

Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for the opportunity to read and review the book.
