Just One of the Royals!!!
Just One of the Royals (The Chicago Falcons #2) - Kate Rooper,Leah Rooper

english review only (spoilerfree)

Netgalley ebook

Summary: Star hockey player Daniel Sacachelli wants only two things: 1) for the Falcons to win next season, and 2) for his secret — the fact he’s actually the prince of Eldonia — to never make its way to Chicago. But if Daniel keeps avoiding his crown, their family will lose their kingdom forever.

Madison Myong can’t believe that her will-they-or-won’t-they best friend Daniel is really a prince! He’s always seemed more rebel than royal. But now, he needs to clean up his image, fast. Posing as his long time girlfriend, Madison accompanies him back to Eldonia, intending to give Daniel a makeover fit for a king.

Only, the more royal Daniel becomes, the more Madison misses her best friend. And if she does her job right, she’ll lose him forever...

My review: This book was just so much fun!!!

Gosh, it feels like forever ago since I read the first book in the Chicago Falcons series. I missed it. I missed these wonderful characters. Also, shocking, and really surprising for someone with my bad memory, I still knew most of what happened in the first book. Would you look at that?

I had this book on my tbr for ages now (gosh, I'm so behind on all my Netgalley ARC's. This one is a year old. Oops).

I'm so happy that I finally read it. To be honest, when I started the book I didn't read the summary and I surely didn't remember it from a year ago. So  e v e r y t h i n g  came as a total surprise. I'm not even kidding. The first sentence of the summary tells you that Daniel is a freaking prince and still, when it was revealed in the book, I was totally freaking out and grinning like an idiot, cause OMG, DANIEL IS A PRINCE!!!!

All I remembered from way back when was that I LOVED MADDISON, and that I was so freaking excited that she got her own book cause SHE IS ALL KINDS OF AMAZING, and she was the greatest friend to Alice in the first book.

So now that I got all my rambling out of the way, let's dive into the actual review.

I love the writing. I just love the flow of the whole story and you can't tell at all that this was written by two people. I loved it.

The characters are amazing, duh. Like I said, I loved Maddison in the first book. She was amazing. So I loved her right from the start in this book, obviously. And Daniel. the prince (hihihi, I'm still giddy about that. Excuse me!). I loved that Hayden and Alice from the first book didn't take a total backseat and were only mentioned a few times but that they actually played a really big part in this book. I also really loved Eva, Daniel's sister.

The relationships.
Let me start with family dynamics, cause that is were the good stuff is. I loved the relationship between Daniel and his mom. Single moms doing their absolute best and raising amazing dudes. YESSSS!!!! I also loved the bit of Maddison's family that we saw. They actually just showed up two times, in the beginning of the book and the end, and what a night and day difference those two scenes were. LOVED IT!!!

Friendships. F R I E N D S H I P S.
BE STILL MY BLEEDING HEART, cause this is were it's at. THIS IS THE STUFF MY DREAMS ARE MADE OF. Daniel and Maddison. Their friendship. I just love relationships that start in friendship and become more. I love Daniel and Hayden and how they always got each others back. Maddison and Alice. Girls supporting each other. And also how Eva fit right into them, even though these three girls are all kinds of different. I LOVED IT.

Storywise. I loved the whole Prince Daniel thing. I loved the whole book pretty much playing in Eldonia and meeting some of the people there. It was such a different vibe from the first book. I loved it. Ice hockey was still a big part of the book, cause it's such a big part of Daniel, and seeing him torn between not wanting to leave his old live behind but also helping his sister and protecting her from having to marry such a douchbag. It hurt my heart.

It was a beautiful story that was quite predictably BUT THAT WAS JUST WHAT I NEEDED. I needed amazing friendships, loveable characters and a mindset of "everything is going to get really terrible before everything gets wrapped up in a nice little bow and all will be right in the world".

Kitty's Book Spot!- Guest post

KBS:  I would love a Guest Post about music. Whether the author(s) listen to it as they write, or make playlists for their books?

LKR:  We are so excited to write a post about music! Music plays a huge role in the way we write. We use music differently in the various stages of writing, so we thought we would break those down.

Brainstorming

This is where the story is just starting to take form in our minds. We’ll often create a joint Spotify playlist and add songs that inspire us. Usually, the songs we add correspond to a certain scene in the book. For example, we listened to “Nice and Airy” by Patrick Doyle from the Cinderella soundtrack to help inspire the sprawling green hills and quaint feel of Eldonia. We’ll often listen to the playlist together while we’re cooking or doing dishes and talk about ideas or what each song means.

Outlining

Once we finish our outline on paper, we’ll go back into Spotify and create a playlist that follows the order of the book. This playlist often includes a mix of scores and songs with lyrics. Each scene of the book has its own song (or two). Our parents live almost two hours away, so we’ll listen to this playlist on the drive to visit them and flesh out the plot.

First Draft

When writing the first draft, we’ll usually put our headphones on and listen to the song that most inspires the scene we're writing. It’s not uncommon for us to listen to the same song on repeat for an hour while writing a scene.

Editing

We don’t listen to as much music while editing. We find we really need to concentrate on the words and sentence structure. We’ll often put on relaxing background music or a "rain sounds" video from YouTube. Video game music is great for this — the Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing soundtracks are two of our favs!

Thanks for taking the time to read about our music process! As a bonus, we’ve included some of our favourite songs from the “Just One of the Royals” playlist!

  • Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis: This is the song the Chicago Blackhawks (our favourite NHL team) play when they score a goal...so obviously we imagine it as the goal song for our Chicago Falcons :)
  • Almost There from Princess and the Frog: We love Disney music, and although the lyrics aren’t perfect, this song embodies Madison in a lot of ways. Madison does so much for other people and tries to accomplish so many things that she doesn’t have time to be a normal teenager.
  • Bella Notte from Lady and the Tramp: Daniel Sacachelli is very proud of his Italian heritage and besides being an amazing hockey player, he’s also a talented cook. His signature dish is spaghetti, so obviously the most famous spaghetti-eating song of all time had to make it on our playlist.
  • Who is She by Patrick Doyle: We listened to the Cinderella soundtrack A LOT when writing this book. Of course, being set in a castle we needed lots of grand ballroom songs.
  • Dive by Ed Sheeran: This song really struck us as Daniel and Madison, two people who care so much about each other, but there’s so many things keeping them apart.

Just One of the Boys!!!
Just One of the Boys - Leah and Kate Rooper

First things first: I received this book through NetGalley.

This book was everything I wanted it to be!!!!

Summary: Alice Bell has one goal: to play for the elite junior hockey team the Chicago Falcons. But when she’s passed over at tryouts for being a girl, she’ll do anything to make her dream a reality...even disguising herself as her twin brother. With her amazing skills on the ice, Alice is sure she’ll fit in easily. That is, until she starts falling for one of her teammates...

Hayden Tremblay, star of the Falcons, can’t keep himself out of the penalty box. Constantly living in the shadow of his older brother, Hayden’s losing his passion for hockey. But when he gets shown up on the ice by the Falcons’ new rookie, Hayden’s determined to teach the kid a thing or two. Little does he guess that “Al’s” surprises on the ice are just the beginning...

The book sucked me in right from the stars. A kick ass girl, who outplays lots of dude on the ice during tryouts and makes the team. Only, that she takes of her helmet and people realize that she's a girl and not a dude. GASP!!!! SCANDAL!!!! A GIRL. ON THE ICE. PLAYING HOCKEY. WHAT?????? So, of course. The only logical thing to do as a coach that just welcomend her on the team, is to make her understand he made a mistake and actually meant her twin brother. Who, well...sucked during the tryouts. SHOCKING, a dude who played mediocre got the place instead of a girl who played amazing. I could go on and on about this but I will stop right here...
Back to the story. Xander, Alice's twin brother actually breaks his leg. And Alice is ready to take his place on the team, acting like she's him. YES PLEASE!!!!!
Twin story: check.
Giving me She's The Man feels: CHECK!!!!

I loved the main characters.

Alice, I loved Alice so much. I loved her as Alice, I loved her as Al. She was amazing.
Hayden. Let's be real about him for a second here, I didn't like this dude at all in the beginning. He was just a mean jerk, who I couldn't care less about. Towards the middle it changed. He got more backstory and NO, the tragic things in his past didn't excuse anything, but towards the middle, he became a actual human being for me that I cared for. He was still a jerk from time to time.
Loved the minor characters.
Xander. Man, I loved him in the beginning, hated him in the middle and loved him again in the end. There is a lot going on for him in the story, once again that's no excuse for how he handles some of the things, but still, towards the end he really stole my heart again.
Madison. She showed up and I loved her. She was super supportive, she was just such a great friend to Alice. Ugh. She was amazing.

I got annoyed with the characters a lot of times, they made terrible decisions, the said a lot of awful things to each other. BUT I LOVED THEM.
I loved the story. I loved the writing.
I highly recommend this book.
