Empowered, Volume 11 - Adam Warren

WOW! What a ride! It's been a long, long wait since the cliffhanger ending of "Empowered Volume 10" but I now forgive Mr. Warren because he took that time to create another perfectly crafted tale.

Tonight was the fast, gotta-see-what-happens-next!next!next!now!now!now! read (because, y'know, resolution to over-a-year-ago cliffhanger); gonna do a slow re-read on the weekend to take in all the details. And also, because Adam Warren makes good use of Chekhov's entire armory, I'll be attempting to figure out which seemingly meaningless little background things could be the seeds of major future plots.

Becoming Superman : My Journey From Poverty To Hollywood - J Michael Straczynski

J. Michael Straczynski is somebody who I've admired for a long time: for his superior talent at storytelling, for his refusal to let the shallow end of the brain pool screw those stories up, for his integrity, for giving his heart and soul to everything he writes.
And now I've read his autobiography over a less-than-24-hour period (I had to stop and sleep at one point because I didn't want to do JMS the disservice of reading this book with anything less than full attention) and WHAM!!! That admiration is increased by I-can't-even-calculate-how-many-times. It's a story both horrifying and grand and all the other descriptive words (even the third ones) in between and told in excellent style.
And that little matter of a 1 followed by 42 zeroes … Douglas Adams long ago gave us the answer to life, the universe, and everything. ;-)

The 5th Gender - G. L. Carriger

Absolutely adorable. (there's something I never dreamt I'd ever say about a murder mystery)

And with a powerful punch of a message within the cuteness.

Swordheart - T. Kingfisher

Absolutely marvelous!!! And it's the beginning of a trilogy!!! Which means hurrah for more and oh damn, I have to wait for the author to write that more. May she write fast as well as brilliantly.

Hunger Makes the Wolf - Alex Wells

Another Sealwhiskers recommendation; I knew I was going to love it halfway through her description. "Firefly" plus "Earth 2" plus "Mad Max" plus "I Owe My Soul to the Company Store". And yet not like any of them; it's unique and fresh and fun and deep and now I have to get my hands on the prequel short story and the sequel novel.
