Facials Can Be Fatal
Facials Can Be Fatal - Nancy J. Cohen Facials Can Be Fatal - Nancy J. Cohen Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Friends of Old Florida, a historic building preservation society, have a huge gala planned including a fashion show. Marla Vail was so excited because her shop has been contracted to do the hair styling for the models. It would be great promotion for the Cut ‘N Dye. But her planned may be cut.. A major donor for the group actually has died in the Cut ‘N Dye while having a facial at the new day spa.

She is also feeling a lot of stress on the home front. She and Dalton have been married less than a year and everyone is asking about a baby/grandchild. Marla is happy with Dalton’s teenage daughter and thought everyone understood there was going to be No Baby, but Dalton is even talking about it and her best friend’s baby is sooooo cute… but until she gets this murder/s solved she has no time for a baby discussion.

I am so happy that I have caught up on this series. (Hair Brained comes out September 12.) I really do enjoy these characters. They have continued to grow in each story and are genuine. The story takes place during the Christmas and Hanukkah season. I liked how the family worked together to have a combined celebration. Also Dalton’s daughter is learning to drive, something every parent looks forward to, 🙂 Both Dalton and Marla may be coloring gray hairs before she gets her license.

The plot is pretty intense as more people get killed and we learn about a man who may be involved with the Asian Mob, another may be selling human hair on the black market, and members of the Friends of Old Florida all seem to be hiding something. Val’s murder may even have something to do with a man’s disappearance years ago. The suspects are plenty and the motives run the gambit. Cohen pulls us in and doesn’t let go. I loved her twists and the way the clues were discovered. I liked that the clues led Marla and Dalton on a day trip to the Florida Keys. A place I would love to visit as well.

With the right amounts of romance and humor Ms. Cohen does this mystery up right. Compelling characters in dicey situations always get my attention. This Bad Hair Day Mystery should not be missed.

All the books in this series stand on their own but for maximum enjoyment check out the earlier books as soon as you can.

A STUDY OF WOMEN'S LEAVENING INFLUENCE IN U.S. POLITICS
Breakthrough: The Making of America's First Woman President - Nancy L. Cohen

Earlier this year, I attended a book reading at a local bookstore where Nancy L. Cohen gave an expansive and compelling presentation about the discoveries she made and interviews she carried out with a variety of women political leaders, analysts, and activists (of varying ages) in her latest book, "BREAKTHROUGH: The Making of America's First Woman President." She gave me much food for thought as someone who has been deeply frustrated with our current dysfunctional political system (Capitol Hill). So, it was that several weeks later, I bought this book and began to read it with great care.

"Breakthrough" is very readable and provides the reader with "an intimate portrait of the savvy women who have built an alternative to the old boy's club and are rewriting the playbook for how women can rise and thrive in politics." The reader also learns how far women in the U.S. had to go in terms of securing their rights as full-fledged citizens, as well as proving themselves as effective legislators on the state and national levels. Indeed, we as a nation have now advanced to the point that we have a well-qualified, proven and experienced candidate in Hillary Rodham Clinton who may be elected as the next President of the United States very soon.

Thank you, Nancy L. Cohen, for showing me how much closer the U.S. can come to achieving "a more perfect union" through utilizing the energies and talents of women who see public service as a means for building a better society for everyone.

Another fun Marla adventure
Peril By Ponytail: A Bad Hair Day Mystery (Bad Hair Day Mysteries) - Nancy J. Cohen

Marla & Dalton are in a dude ranch in Arizona for their honeymoon and of course there is a murder mystery to solve.  What is behind the fall to his death of a forest ranger?  Does it have anything to do with the sabotage at the ranch and the ghost town renovation?  And why is Dalton's family feud such a secret?
This was a great mystery with a few unexpected turns.   I missed Dalton's daughter, Brianna, but otherwise this was a great addition to a wonderful cozy series.
