The Dark Tower, Volume 4: Fall of Gilead
The Dark Tower, Volume 4: Fall of Gilead - Peter David,Stephen King,Richard Ianove,Robin Furth

Not too much to say here. We get to see Gilead before it's fall. Constant Readers know about some of the events if you have read the other Dark Tower books. We have Roland reeling from killing his mother and Cort on his deathbed.

Oh Roland. He is really a tragic figure. I know that King took inspiration from the Tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table when writing the Dark Tower. You just see more similarities in the comics than the books when you read about Maerlyn, and Stephen Deschain and his wife, Gabrielle Deschain. I am starting to see Roland a more of a Galahad at times with him and his quest for the Dark Tower.

We get Roland, Cuthbert, and Alain still doing what they can to stand by Roland and Gilead. We also have the character of Aileen Ritter who would be a gunslinger except for her being born a girl and not a boy. And we follow along with Sheemie too.

I don't have much to say besides I really enjoyed this installment. We know what what the Gunslingers are going to go and though you wish it could be different, it is not meant to be. We also get some backstory on the Man in Black and I maybe get the skin crawls. Reading this on my Kindle was fine. I was able to zoom in on panels. I just wish that Amazon had set it like it did the one shot comics I was reading where the panels zoom in automatically for you and then zoom out when you get to the last one on the page.

The illustrations are a bit darker in this one I have to say. It was hard to read people's faces here and there.

The comic flow was a bit haphazard at times before we get to the endpoint.

Looking to read "Battle of Jericho Hill" next.

Great Prelude to the End of Gilead
The Dark Tower, Volume 3: Treachery - Peter David,Stephen King,Richard Ianove,Jae Lee,Robin Furth
I really wanted Furth to move the story forward a lot more than he did. Maybe if this volume and the previous one were combined I would have felt more. Instead I kept wishing for something to happen. We did get that scene that was shown to us readers in Wizard and Glass though, so that was good.

We don't get much of our Roland in this one. Just Bert and Alain trying to do what they can to snap Roland over his grief of Susan and also his obsession with the grapefruit stone he now has.

I also am baffled by Roland's father, for being a gunslinger he doesn't seem too bright. I say that as someone who does not get what hold his wife has over him after finding out that she has betrayed him. I guess sending her off to be cleansed of her sins was just the way they did things in Gilead, but I would have been done and told her to enjoy the convent. The whole parallel to King Arthur and Guinevere cannot be denied. But since this book's version of Lancelot (The Man in Black AKA Martin Broadcloak) is neither loyal or trusted by Steven Deschain one wonders why he let the guy hang out for as long as he did. I think the book made my sympathsize with Gabrielle Deschain more, probably because King alluded that the character was put under a spell. The graphic novel shows her as a willing participant.

The colors in this one felt very drab. I am glad I was able to blow up the panels on my Kindle, otherwise I would have had a hard time reading this in hardcover form without a magnifying glass.

Well we all know what is coming next after this one. Cannot wait to read The Dark Tower: Fall of Gilead.

Reading progress update: I've read 100%.

I just decided to read through the whole volume. This one shows the second incident that shaped Roland. The death of his mother. This volume didn't feel as grand as the other volumes though. Probably just 3 stars from me.

Chapter three moves the story a little. Roland's mother is still a mess. You can feel the beginning of the end for some of these characters.

Chapter two was a dud. And we have a character introduced that I don't recall from the books, Aileen. She wants to be a Gunslinger. She changes the Gunslinger motto and it felt...off. Anyway this chapter read as filler.
