good read, great characters
Never Apart - Romily Bernard

Grace felt like she was going to die.  Again as she and Ander run to get away from Finn but he always seems to catch them. Ander promises he will find Grace if they Fall again. as he always does. It’s always the three of them, they always find each. In every lifetime Ander had died and Grace watched. This time Grace  tells Ander “you promised”. Grace repeats it louder as that will bring Finn closer and Ander will have to keep his word. Every other time Ander had fought  Finn and lost.  This time Grace will  fight and Ander will watch and maybe the pattern will break. Grace doesn’t fight very well   but is good at being a lure for Finn. He’s given her lots  of practice. Grace waits and waits and Fin studies her and studies her. Then Finn says Grace and she charges him. Hitting him low, ramming her shoulder into his chest as his nails dig into her arm. Finn plows her into the mud and grace jams the knife deep, deeper but then Grace slips and as Finn and Grace grapple in the mud Ander yanks Grace to her feet and tells her to run but Grace says she can’t. Grace and Ander had done this over forty times with always the same ending. Grace understands how it works, how it ends, how much she loved the boy that she was about to watch die. Once upon a time they were all friends but now…. Ander tells Grace to run but she can’t. She can’t do it anymore, she can’t watch it anymore. Finn was barely past seventeen as was Grace. She says to Finn “ why does this keep happening, why did Finn keep doing thi. They had been friends”. Finn said : “we have to pay for what we did”. It takes Finn five days to find them every time. Grace came to in someone’s house that has a party going on. There are other rules Ander and Grace knw: 1- get your stuff, 2- get oriented, 3- get going because they only have five days before Finn finds them again. A s far as Ander and Grace can tell every time they Fall they surface with different lives it’s like they end up in parallel universes, timelines that belong to other versions of themselves. Grace doesn’t know why her name is always the same, she doesn’t know why Finn always hurts her. This time though things are different. Ander didn’t find Grace, this time Grace’s family is together again including her twin who had been missing in all her other jumps. How can she solve this puzzle alone.  Ander and her twin brother are best friends. This time Ander didn’t remember finding Grace and before he always had. From the time Grace was six she felt connected to Ander. The three had issues- Ander’s was drinking, Grace was extremely shy and had social anxiety. And Finn just wanted to be accepted for who he is.

I liked this book a lot. I wish I could rate this a 4.5. I loved the twists and turns. I didn’t want to put this down once I started reading this book, it had my interest all the way from the beginning until the end.  This had a good plot and pace. This book draws you in right from the beginning. This was also well written. I don’t usually like going back and forth in a book but it just wasn’t that bad  although I liked being in the past less as for me it dragged some. This is a fantasy thriller and a very good one. I felt this was a sad romance though. I loved the characters and the  twists and turns and I recommend. Once again I wish  I could rate it a 4.5.

“Too bad I don't believe in heroes, super or otherwise.”
Find Me - Romily Bernard

Book Title:  Find Me

Author:  Romily Bernard

Series:  Find Me #1

Genre:  Mystery, Suspense, Young Adult

Publisher:  Harper Teen

Source:   I Own Kindle E-book

Wicket (Wick) has had a hard life and she sees things a little differently than most, she has to be her own hero, and Lily's, (her little sister) instead of waiting for someone else to be.  Her mom has committed suicide and her dad is a drug dealing felon who only wants to use her for her hacking skills.  She has serious trust issues, and with reason.

  • Plot: 8/5  It was both intriguing and confusing to me.  The aspect of throwing in the diary entries at the beginning of each chapter, threw me off course every time, until the last third of the book, then they finally started making sense to me.  At that point, I went back and read them all and everything started clicking for me.  The whole story is centered around Wick trying to find Tessa, but Tessa is dead not missing, so maybe the book should have been called “Find Him” since essentially it was about finding the one that pushed her to kill herself.
  • Characters: 8/5  Wick is intriguing, but I wanted to know her more, feel more connected to her.  I really wanted to know more about Griff too.
  • The Feels: 3/5  I didn't really feel the relationship between Wick (interesting name) and Griff.  It wasn’t really emphasized enough for me.
  • Theme: 5/5  The hacking aspect, is a little frightening to think about.  I know it's out there, but most of the time I'm not forced to think about it.
  • Flow: 5/5  Rather choppy, hard to follow.  It did improve as I got used to her writing style.
  • Book Cover: 5/5  This cover is awesome, best part of the book.
  • Sex Factor: No
  • Ending: 4/5  I was breathless by the time I got to the end, even if it was mostly predictable.   Cliffhanger:   No, this particular mystery is all wrapped up.

Will I continue the series?  I’m not sure because the synopsis for the next book introduces a second guy who could be a romantic interest for Wick, a love triangle???  Not that I’m put off by love triangles, these things do happen, I just don’t know…

“Find Me.”

These are the words written on Tessa Waye’s diary. The diary that ends up with Wick Tate. But Tessa’s just been found . . . dead.

Wick has the right computer-hacking skills for the job, but little interest in this perverse game of hide-and-seek. Until her sister Lily is the next target.

Then Griff, trailer-park boy next door and fellow hacker, shows up, intent on helping Wick. Is a happy ending possible with the threat of Wick’s deadbeat dad returning, the detective hunting him sniffing around Wick instead, and a killer taunting her at every step?

Foster child. Daughter of a felon. Loner hacker girl. Wick has a bad attitude and sarcasm to spare.

But she’s going to find this killer no matter what.

Because it just got personal.

It can be difficult to write a mystery from a child's POV because most people cannot think, or wrap their head around a kid trying to solve a mystery when they should leave it to the professionals to solve.  I think ultimately this story explained it well why Wick didn't feel she could trust anyone else to solve it.  When you have no one in your life who you feel you can trust, you have to figure it out on your own.

Remember Me
Remember Me - Romily Bernard

Review

I was enthralled with Find Me, and Remember didn't disappoint.

Wick is still one of my favorite characters. She continues to do all she can to protect her sister, and the life she has now. She doesn't like dealing with Carson but doesn't see that she has a choice. He could screw up her entire life. Griff kind of annoyed me in this book. He says he cares for Wick, but he doesn't understand why she's still working with cases for Carson. He hasn't been in the situation, and he comes off as very "judgy."

There are so many twists and turns in this book. Yo ustay interestend in the plot, and want to know who's behind the murder, and why. There are more tense scenes thta include breaking and entering, and of course, more hacking. Wick is good at what she does, but doesn't want to be just that. She wants to be more, and doesn't know how to get there. I feel like she spends most of the book trying to be what everyone else wants her to be.

I love everything about this book, and cannot wait for the 3rd one. Too bad it's another year away. Luckily we have Griff's story to hold us over.

Find Me
Find Me - Romily Bernard

Review

Find Me is a fantastic thriller.  I was guessing at every corner, and may have stayed up really late to finish this book.

I love everything about Wick.  She's a strong character to have gone through all the crap she has and still be sane.  She doesn't ask for help, and insists on taking on the burden for everything.  She is also incredibly snarky.  I appreciate Griff.  He isn't who I would picture a girl like Wick going for, but he understands her on a level.  He isn't afraid of the things she's been through, and has a serious hero complex.

So much freaking intensity.  Just when you think Wick will get a break, something else happens.  She doesn't want to look behind the scenes at what happened to Tessa.  She also suspects everyone.  Wick doesn't trust easily, and there are a few moments in the book that you find out why.  The scenes where there is an event are so real.  It was hard to pull myself out of the action.  I felt every emotion right along with Wick.

Bernard has an ability to suck you into her book.  I didn't want to put it down, and kept going on about how awesome this book is to everyone.

Thrilling YA mystery
Find Me - Romily Bernard

"FIND ME.  These are the words written on Tess Waye's diary. The diary that ends up with Wick Tate. But Tessa's just been found... dead."

Wick's life has been more of a nightmare than a dream. So she has a hard time adjusting to a "normal life" and foster parents who really seem to care about her. Wick's father is a felon and he has been abusive to Wick and her sister, Lily. Her father is currently on the run from the law, but they live in fear that he will return.

Wick is an excellent hacker and earns extra money by finding information for women who are having trouble in their relationships. Of course, this isn't legal but Wick feels like she needs the money in case she ever has to take Lily and run. Wick doesn't like to have to depend on anyone else for anything.

Detective Carson is searching for Wick's father and is keeping Wick under surveillance. Wick is sure Carson is a bad cop and that he is out to get her.

Wick has a lot of things on her plate and she doesn't know who to trust. The last thing she needs is to get mixed up in Tessa's death. But whoever abused Tessa has threatened to move on to Lily next. And Wick can't let anyone hurt Lily.

My opinion

This was a good thriller. Wick is a prickly character but with good reason. She doesn't like to let people get close. I enjoyed watching her relationship with Griff evolve. Is he a good guy? I was pretty sure he was but so many people in this story aren't what they seem to be.  I enjoyed trying to figure out who was the bad guy from Tessa's diary. And the reveal was exciting and satisfying.

This book is written for teens, but adults can enjoy it too. If you like thrillers, I think you will enjoy this novel. I read the physical book for this one and I will be passing it on to a friend who I know loves reading young adult novels as much as I do. :)
