There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Bat
[(There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! )] [Author: Lucille Colandro] [Aug-2005] - Lucille Colandro

This book is a halloween twist on the story, There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. I believe that any grade would enjoy this book. The Lexile level of this book is 400L. For younger grades, you could do a lesson on sequence of events. The children could be given an item that the old lady ate and have to line up in the correct order. You could even collaborate with the music teacher to make the story into a play. Each child could be given a certain role and get to make a costume. For older grades, you could do a health and writing lesson. Each child could make the old lady's stomach out of clear wrap and paper bags. They could place the items she ate in the bag and then items that would be healthier. The students could write about healthy alternatives for the old lady.

Grade Level Equivalent 2.2

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed  Bat by Lucille Colandro is part of a great series of books to use in the classroom to teach sequence of events and to use during different holidays and themes of the year. This book is great to use during Halloween.

The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein

I love The Giving Tree and would recommend it to anyone! This book is on a second grade reading level for AR. There are many different lessons that a teacher could use for this book, for example series of events. For example, in what order did the tree give away its' parts.

Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you Hear?
Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? - Bill Martin Jr.,Eric Carle

This is a good book that kids enjoy and have fun with if the teacher really gets into reading it. I would recommend having this in your classroom library for any teacher from kindergarten through second grade. As a class I would want to do an activity for either kindergarten or first grade. I would give each child a role then when reading the book they would have to stand up for whatever role they received. (example: stand up and make a snake's hiss when the teacher reads that part). Then I would group them together having one of each animal in the group and have the students place them in the correct order based off the book.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie - Laura Joffe Numeroff,Felicia Bond

If You Give a Mouse A Cookie is a great book that most kids seem to enjoy. This book is on a first grade reading level so I would recommend having it on your bookshelves for kindergarten through second for those advance and slower readers. For a class lesson I believe it will work for kindergarten through second as well. You could do a couple of math lessons with this book. For example, if I gave a mouse two cookies and Jess gives him one cookie how many would he have. Language arts wise the only lesson that I can come up with is a sequence of events. Give each students the events that took place (hair cut, sweeping, and other in the book) and allow them to work in groups to see if they can place them in the correct order.
