The list maker
The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus - Jen Bryant,Melissa Sweet

The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus by Jen Bryant with pictures by Melissa Sweet is a biography (written for children) of the creator of the Thesaurus, Peter Roget. Some of the most beautiful mixed media art has been used to enhance a subject which I imagine many adults (not to mention kids) would consider quite dry. While the art is gorgeous, I have to be honest and say that Roget didn’t lead the most exciting life so the story itself isn't exactly edge of the seat content. From childhood, he spent much of his time making categorized lists (sounds like the life of the party) which didn't help his shyness but did help him to graduate early from school. It also helped him in his preparations to become a doctor where an ability to stay focused while learning a vast amount of information came in handy. This book tracks his life and accomplishments in an easy to digest manner for kids aged 9 and up (although younger kids could understand the content with help from an adult). If nothing else, this is an absolutely beautiful piece of art and for that alone should be celebrated. 6/10 because it didn't knock my socks off or supply me with any particularly new information.

The Rural Setting Thesaurus: A Writer's Guide to Personal and Natural Places
The Rural Setting Thesaurus: A Writer's ... The Rural Setting Thesaurus: A Writer's Guide to Personal and Natural Places - Becca Puglisi,Angela Ackerman The first 13% is all valuable information that will make you a better writer if you implement it. There are great tips such as “the setting in each scene should be unique and memorable” and “conflict needs to be recurring and frequent while varying in intensity.” The settings each have something for all five primary senses, people found there, potential conflicts, related settings, tips, and examples. A wonderful reference guide that could also be used for writing prompts. The book’s appendixes are very nice.

The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus
The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus - Jen Bryant,Melissa Sweet Fantastic picture book biography of the man indirectly responsible for most of the world's purple prose problems.

In all seriousness, this book is hard not to love. Bryant's prose is eloquent, Sweet's art is incredible, and the subject matter is presented beautifully. I remember really liking A River of Words back when I read it in 2009, and this one is even better. When I have kids, this is a must for their picture book library. Though that may just be because I've loved words ever since I was about eight years old, much like Roget...

The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer's Guide to Character Expression
The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer's Guide to Character Expression - Becca Puglisi,Angela Ackerman A reference book for "show, don't tell" emotions. It's a real gem (even if these are all basic things anyone with basic observant skills should probably know), because even if you know these things sometimes you get stuck when trying to describe them (or don't want to repeat yourself) and this book is really helpful for that.
